Pakistan opening 'political office' for Afghan Taliban in Islamabad: source

Pakistan setting up a "political office' for the Afghan Taliban in Islamabad, a government source said, following the Moscow trilateral meeting between China, Pakistan, and Russia on Afghanistan in December last year.

The Taliban have already an official overseas office in the Qatari, capital, Doha, as part of a move to launch a political arm for the militant group, with a known address and authorized representatives who could attend talks.

A government source on condition anonymity told 1TV that in Moscow tripartite session, the Taliban's Doha office was seen as an entity with no "political legitimacy" and dependent on Americans, hence the parties came up with the decision to open "political office" for Taliban in Islamabad.

The Moscow meeting was held on bahave of Afghanistan where there was no official representives of the Afghan goverment. In the meeting the involved countries have agreed to get the Afghan Taliban individuals delisted from the United Nations sanctions list.

The former Taliban officials, however, have not confirmed the opening of the new office.

" I don't think the Taliban will take such move that would lead to the opening of a new office for them in Pakistan, " said Sayed Akbar Agha, former Taliban official.

This decision comes as Russia has confirmed its ties with the Afghan Taliban.

Some Afghan critics believe, the Afghanistan war has the essence of intelligence and regional intelligence supporting the Taliban, adding the opening of the new office will add to the complexity of this war.
