Pakistan needs to be told US won't tolerate terrorist safe: John C Rood

The US will not tolerate Pakistan providing sanctuaries to terrorists and Karachi needs to be told as much, nominee for Under Secretary of Defence for Policy John C Rood said today.

Rood said Pakistan's failure to keep a check on terrorist safe havens was undermining US's efforts in Afghanistan, compelling Washington to explore new options.

"Ultimately, we in the United States, have got a make it clear to the Pakistani government that we can't tolerate that sort of support that will undermine our efforts in Afghanistan where our troops have been fighting and we've had over 2,000 of our Americans killed in that conflict," Rood said during his confirmation hearing.

Rood was responding to a question from Senator John McCain(Former Pro-Pak Mccain seems to be taking real interest in Pakistan), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Rood said that Pakistan sheltering the Taliban and Haqqani network had been "a real undercut" to the US's efforts in Afghanistan.

"..and unfortunately, this is a problem that's persisted really over the 16 years of that conflict, a very stubborn problem to solve," he said.

McCain said over the years he has developed an excellent relationship with his friends in Pakistan.

"But there's going to come a time where we have to tell them they have to choose and, of course, Chinese influence is increasing(McCain asks ISI to pick 1 daddy) and as you know there is further turmoil that is ongoing as we speak," McCain said.

"This is a very, very, very, complex and difficult challenge we're facing, but we've tried everything that I know of, besides saying, "Look, you either help us or we're going to have to change our relationship," he said.

"However, the US should also demonstrate its serious concerns about Pakistan expanding its nuclear program and providing safe-haven for militant groups in its territory," he said.

Sanctuary and freedom of movement for the Afghan Taliban and associated militant networks inside Pakistani territory continue to be contributing factors that negatively impact security conditions and stability inside Afghanistan, Rood said.

"If confirmed," Rood said, "I will examine ways in which US can end Pakistan s sanctuary for militant networks".

Pakistan cautions India against ‘two front’ situation

ISLAMABAD: Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Security Lt-Gen (retd) Nasser Khan Janjua on Friday cautioned India against creating a ‘two-front situation’ for Pakistan, insisting such a policy would be detrimental for regional peace.

The NSA made the remarks while speaking to the visiting Special Representative of Federal Republic of Germany for Afghanistan and Pakistan Markus Potzel accompanied by German Ambassador Martin Kobler here.

An official hand-out issued by the NSA office said the two sides discussed the regional security situation and the prevailing situation in Afghanistan.

The statement said the German envoy sought the NSA’s opinion on matters pertaining to the regional security situation with particular reference to Pakistan and India.

Gen Janjua said, “For regional peace and stability, it is imperative for both the countries to engage with each and resolve their disputes.”

“By resolving their disputes, both the countries need to belong to the future,” the NSA told the visiting German diplomat.

He explained how the region’s security construct was fast becoming under stress.

He said the ‘two front situation’ was being created for Pakistan.
“India is self-seeking a two front situation which does not auger well for the region. All major powers of the world need to play their role in keeping the region stable and balanced.”

By the two front situation, Pakistan means that India may put the country under pressure both from the eastern and western frontiers.

While commenting on the relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the NSA said: “Peace in Afghanistan is more important for Pakistan than any other country.”

He reiterated that instead of winning the war in Afghanistan, we all should endeavour to seek an end to the conflict in the war-torn country by political means.

“To end miseries of Afghanistan and its people, warring sides should seek a political solution to the conflict as the perpetual war of last 16 years has given us nothing but human miseries and sufferings,” Janjua said.

“We are working to strengthen border security management and to develop a collective framework for working together with Afghanistan,” he added.

The envoy appreciated Pakistan’s positive contributions towards peace and stability in Afghanistan and for the whole region.

He said: “Germany firmly stands by its engagements in Afghanistan and is committed to the country’s stabilisation and reconstruction. Pakistan’s role is crucial for sustainable peace and development in Afghanistan.”

Meanwhile, the Director General (SA & SAARC), Dr Mohammad Faisal, summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner JP Singh on Friday and condemned the unprovoked ceasefire violations by the Indian occupation forces in Chirikot and Nezapir sectors on 17 November 2017, resulting in the martyrdom of two civilians (Rasheeda Begum, resident of Truthi village and Muhammad Haneef, resident of Nezapir), and injuries to five others, including two women.

“Despite calls for restraint, India continues to indulge in ceasefire violations. In 2017 to date, Indian forces have carried out more than 1300 ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary, resulting in the shahadats [martyrdom] of 52 innocent civilians and injuries to 170 others, as compared to 382 ceasefire violations in 2016),” said a foreign office statement.

The deliberate targeting of civilians is indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity and international human rights and humanitarian laws.

The ceasefire violations by India are a threat to regional peace and security and may lead to a strategic miscalculation, it added.

The Director General (SA & SAARC) urged the Indian side to respect the 2003 ceasefire arrangement; investigate this and other incidents of ceasefire violations; instruct the Indian forces to respect the ceasefire, in letter and spirit and maintain peace on the LoC and the Working Boundary.

He urged that the Indian side should permit UNMOGIP to play its mandated role as per the UN Security Council resolutions.

QUETTA: Only two days after bodies of 15 men from Punjab were recovered from Kech, Levies have found five more bullet-riddled bodies from near the Baran Hostel, Heeok-Tajaban Tehsil in Turbat, a city in Balochistan.

Levies personnel have shifted the bodies to a nearby hospital where three of them have been identified.

The identified victims belong to different areas of Punjab. Investigation into the matter is currently underway.

The five dead are identified as Usman Qadir, Hussain , Danish Ali s/o Nazeer, Dakhana Khas Gujrat, Badar Munir. The fourth and fifth dead body have yet to be identified.

On Wednesday, 15 dead bodies were recovered from Turbat, Quetta, who had also been shot and killed, and all of them also had alleged connections to Punjab.

The banned Baloch Liberation Front (BLF), headed by Allah Nazar Baloch, has claimed responsibility for the killings of the 15 men from Punjab, supposedly aspiring to enter Europe illegally.

Government drafts strategy to foil conspiracies against Pakistan

    KARACHI :
The federal government has decided to take steps under a well-coordinated strategy to foil conspiracies by foreign agencies that are involved in creating instability in Pakistan.

All elements, groups, organisations, military wings, facilitators and providers of financial and other resources will be eliminated completely. To eradicate these elements strict and fast operations will be undertaken, without giving any concession to these elements. The federal government is also expected to raise the issue of conspiracies by other countries to destabalise Pakistan on all international forums.

Important sources in the federal capital said that all high-level authorities have discussed in detail the overall law and order situation in the country, the situation in Balochistan, cross-border terrorism by Afghanistan, conspiracies being hatched against CPEC, the agenda of hostile agencies to destabilise Pakistan. Action against terrorist organisations involved in disruption of law and order situation will be expedited.

Federal authorities have also communicated to the US and Afghanistan that their governments should take more action against terrorist organisations that use Afghan land and are involved, directly or indirectly, in destabalising law and order in Pakistan.

Federal authorities have also decided to disclose conspiracies by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) against Pakistan and CPEC at international level, including the United Nations.

On the international forum, Pakistan will also remind countries that it is playing a front-line role in the war against terror while some countries are constantly hatching conspiracies to destabilise it.

The UN, the US and other countries should pressurise India and other countries on a diplomatic level to ensure such conspiracies are eradicated. Moreover, Pakistan will use all available options to defend itself.

Sources told The Express Tribune that the federation has decided to take steps to address security issues in Balochistan. “Strict action will be taken against the elements disrupting law and order situation in the province. The peace programme will be expanded gradually.”

The federal authorities have also started considering legal options available to get custody of those arrested through Interpol. If these people are arrested, the federal government will file cases against them on the charges of terrorism and other crimes and cases against these people will be sent to the military courts.

Sources informed The Express Tribune that the federal government has expedited the scrutiny of the cases of terrorists to ascertain those who fall under the purview of military courts. After completing the legal requirements, these cases will be sent to military courts.

The federation has also decided that no propaganda will be allowed against CPEC. Plans to protect CPEC will be implemented completely and work on the corridor will be accelerated.

The federal and provincial governments will continue work on the ongoing policy and strategy of coordinated efforts to improve the law and order situation in the country. The federal government has also promised to extend its full support to all the provincial governments.

Pakistan already spending 8% budget on climate, says minister
    (SAFED JHOOT!)

Pakistan is already contributing 8% of its budgetary allocations to address the issue of climate change as it faces huge impacts like recurrent floods, heat waves, cyclones, drought, desertification, glacial-melt and sea level rise despite its minimal contribution to global warming.

“These have far-reaching impacts on the government’s efforts to reduce poverty, enhance food security, improve health care, and improve access to energy.

“Nationally, we are already incurring 8% of our budgetary resources to address climate change, creating extreme pressures on our economy,” said Minister for Climate Change Mushaidullah Khan while addressing negotiators and observers on Thursday at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP23).

SI Ejaz and a rescue official claimed two others ─ a security guard and a driver accompanying the AIG ─ may have lost their lives in the blast, but the reports have not been confirmed.
