While it is one of the duties of the government to provide people with the best services and facilities, it is also our basic civic duty to treat those public services and facilities with respect.

And it is very easy to blame the government for lack of development in the country and conveniently forget about our civic duty.

Do we really deserve trains like Tejas Express? Twitter @sureshpprabhu

This is pretty much what happened when the Mumbai-Goa Tejas Express — India's first high-speed semi-luxurious train — returned to Mumbai after completing its maiden trip.

The train — that covers 630 kilometres in less than nine hours and has modern amenities on board like LCD TVs, WiFi, CCTV, tea and coffee vending machines, bio-vacuum toilets and touch-less water taps — arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday in a complete mess.

Some passengers on the train had thrashed the LCD screens, stolen the headphones provided to them and had soiled the toilets, reported The Asian Age.

There was also so much litter on the train that the shocked railway authorities had to appeal to the passengers to treat the Tejas Express worse than they would their own property.

A passenger said that some people tried to remove the LCD screen by pulling on its hinges while others did not flush the toilet after using it, because of which the toilet began to stink an hour after the journey had begun.

As far as the stolen headphones are concerned, Mumbai Mirror quoted another official as saying, "The headphones were distributed just after the journey commenced. There wasn't an announcement to return the headphones because we expected passengers to not carry them away, just like they don't take away pillows and blankets."

This raises a question about whether we really deserve high-quality facilities like those given on the Tejas Express. After all, if the facilities are anyway going to be vandalised and stolen, the government should rather provide low-quality services to us and then spend the money saved on food, education or employment.

We often keep complaining about how the railway stations and trains in India are dirty but forget that the infamous paan stains on platforms and trains are the result of people spitting paan wherever they feel like.

As far as littering is concerned, it will probably take a long time before most of us realise that government programmes like Swachch Bharat Abhiyan can never succeed and the Ganga will never be clean until we make a conscious effort to respect our surroundings.

Incidence like this makes me think, that some, how may be these people don't deserve train like this, since they have made a habit to see the old, rusty, fade red local train.

I had tagged the Finance Minister over proposals of IT Brackets and suggested a mandatory filing of IT linked with Aadhaar by 100% of population, including agricultural sector. This would have ensured a sense of 'ownership' and 'responsibility' of public property amongst all, improved the IT collections and mobilisation of revenue and above all, ensured proper accountability. By filing IT returns and minimal taxation of say 10% right from pay of Re 1 income, it would have made the person aware of the 'costs' being borne by the citizens of this nation. Those who the government wants to exempt, could be given transfer of credit into their account after filing of their income and collation of the data for the year.

Presently, people like me pay taxes and know that these go towards the public services and infrastructure. But those who do not, consider it their right to get such facilities and to misuse them. They take it as their god given right as they do not pay a single rupee towards it and claim it as 'public's property' and their 'democratic right' to spoil it.

No Indian deserves anything free. I am very clear and emphatic about it.

Hell, I pay more taxes than 70% of Indian tax paying population and still do not get 24 x 7 electricity supply!

    Shoot the SOBs

I would suggest GOI taking in a cautionary Security deposit before embarkation or include that in ticket fare, from passengers before they enter such trains, the deposit can be refunded after,All property has been checked out as safe, undamaged and use the CCTV to nab culprits. Only when people are made to pay for the services will they understand the cost and importance to keep the public property in pristine shape.
Refund of security deposit can be done directly via E-Payments or sent to their back accounts.

First Mahamana express now this is the way people treats a brilliant initiative by the Ministry of Railways and then they will go cry on Television about lack of proper facilities in the Railways.

The govt needs stricter actions against such idiots, maybe identity them in the CCTVs along with the help of coach attendees and fine or ban them from traveling with Railways for 6 months.

IR is no longer public property. It's a govt property managed with the help of money paid by the taxpayers. About time govt enforce some basic sense of civility into such gremlins.

    Bound to happen.

By the use of CCTV such people should be identified, then banned life time from travelling by Indian Railways or in Indian civilian air liners and also pay 300-500% of the damage done.

It only shows there's no CIVIC SENSE in people in India.

People across classes RICH or POOR, UPPER CLASS or LOWER CLASS, LITERATE or ILLITERATE all are same. We/These Indians like to dirty our nation but when we/they move out of country we/they become well-mannered, no littering, no rowdy behavior. And then we say how dirty India is and how neat and clean a small nation like Singapore is.

Like it or we Indians are hypocrites.

We should introduce heavy monetary fines in thousands, Jail terms 7 days to 1 year and even physical punishments like 10/20/50/100 batons on the bottom of person involved like it is in Singapore, so next time he remembers that pain. This definitely will induce some FORCED CIVIC SENSE into people in India.

Sorry to say and people might not like it but even the affluent in India shows tendencies of stealing. Also, typically Indians only care of their belongings and can be ruthless when things do not belong to them. Indian railways should have expected some of this. if they want to run this train they need to expect this in future.

They need to link Aadhaar or PAN or similar to railway tickets. Stick cameras inside every bogie.

The only time people in India don't commit crimes is when they know they are being watched.
