A new @DRDO_India BMD interceptor sporting an indigenous IIR seeker intercepted a ballistic target at an altitude of 97 km earlier today.

Good to see we are making our own seekers.

for those who think that we have tested our BMD against Prithvi size target, it was tested against Prithvi RV, many times. including testing of its warhead on land.

    here some test results

    A few facts

    3hDelhi Defence Review‏ @delhidefence
BREAKING: A new variant of @DRDO_India's PDV interceptor executed a 'hit to kill' test mission against a ballistic target earlier today.

    3hDelhi Defence Review‏ @delhidefence
The interception took place at an altitude of 97 km, even as the incoming target was moving along an undefined path.

This new PDV sports a new indigenous Imaging Infrared Seeker, propulsion as well as avionics.

So the recent launch of 100s of microsats by PSLV is not just a coincidence.

India successfully test-fires interceptor missile off Odisha coast
    PTIBalasore (Odisha) , Saturday, February 11, 2017

It is a significant milestone in the direction of developing a two-layered Ballistic Missile Defence system.
India today successfully test-fired its interceptor missile off the Odisha coast, achieving a significant milestone in the direction of developing a two-layered Ballistic Missile Defence system.

The interceptor was launched from Abdul Kalam Island (Wheeler Island) of ITR at about 7.45 am.

This mission, termed as "PDV mission is for engaging the targets in the exo-atmosphere region at an altitude above 50 km of earth's atmosphere", said a Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) official.

"Both, the PDV interceptor and the two stage target missile, were successfully engaged," he said. The target was developed for mimicking a hostile Ballistic Missile approaching from more than 2000 km away was launched from a ship anchored in the Bay of Bengal.

In an automated operation, radar based detection and tracking system detected and tracked the enemy's ballistic missile.

The computer network with the help of data received from radars predicted the trajectory of the incoming Ballistic Missile.

PDV that was kept fully ready, took-off once the computer system gave the necessary command for lift-off. The Interceptor guided by high accuracy Inertial Navigation System (INS) supported by a Redundant Micro Navigation System moved towards the estimated point of the interception.

Once the missile crossed the atmosphere, the Heat Shield ejected and the IR Seeker dome opened to look at the Target location as designated by the Mission Computer.

With the help of Inertial Guidance and IR Seeker the missile moved for interception. All events were monitored in real-time by the Telemetry/Range Stations, at various other locations.

What does "undefined path" actually means??? Any idea what Target they used for interception??

During war such micro satellites in huge number s are required and deployed for communication and making ad-hoc GPS. It's good that India has demonstrated and has this capability to launch such satellites in short notice. Our adversaries should know our capabilities.

Also this same technology is used to make MIRV capable missiles. :azn:

Tested agaist a ballistic target means some ballistic missile or some object following similar way to travel as that of BM.

Object following undefined path means it was either not made to travel to get hit easily but in fact team launching BMD were not told about trajectory and path of target.

System itself found and shot it down.

Means BMD has matured and it was an actual capability test instead of "spoon feeding" missile.
    Quite big achievement!

It was just like shooting down missile in war.

The interceptor system [whole surveillance system which picks up missile ] had no idea about the part of incoming missile [I.e, the incoming missile was maneuvering to an extent, and neither did they had direct communication with the launching system. ]

Means the PDV did not know beforehand the characteristics of target. Its all realtime calculations done by automated PDV system.
And its a hard kill? . Sounds like Israel:biggthumpup: j/k

If composites are used then a lot of weight might have been shed and it must not be more than 1.5 -2 t now .

Anyway what is better EFP or HTK ... as I think Multi EFP would be more suited just as in case hitting device can miss the target but multi EFP won't as it will be equipped with too many small shrapnel....
