That's why they still need Russian engines, radars (having AESA technology, doesn't automatically makes the radar superior to BARS, let alone IRBIS-E PESAs), not to mention TVC and SC capability.

    However, J16 will be the counterpart to the upgraded MKI (which we still are waiting for) and when that arrives and we have actual performance figures of the Chinese radar, it will be interesting to compare and draw conclusions.

    No Chinese fighter have it so far, since the Russians didn't provided them that tech so far. If they gave it with the Su 35, I'm sure we will soon see J20 with an "indigenously developed" TVC too. :rolleyes2:

    3D printing becoming a new way for fighter R&D

    The aviation industry as a high-end manufacturing industry, has been leading the progress of manufacturing technology. It has a honeycomb-like structure , although it is a piece of metal material, but it looks like paper.And its strength is good.

    China has been used the 3D printing materials in the fighter manufacturing applications for long time. J-15 also have 3D manufacturing materials. In 2014 Zhuhai air show, China's stealth fighter "Uagle Eagle"J-31 also used a lot of 3D printing materials.

    1. invite foreign designers to outsource production to build up know-how in your workers
    2. steal designs through industrial espionage to make use of acquired know-how for your own uses
    3. build your own designs based on experience acquired with foreign designs

    China has mostly finished its transition to stage 3. Some complex fields remain troublesome, such as jet engine technology, but they're getting there. By 2030 or 2040 they will be innovators. Underestimate them at your own peril.
