    More information on the TB001 UAV, shown at the China-ASEAN Expo in Nanning, China. The manufacturer is 腾盾科技, English name Tengoen, from Sichuan province.

    When your technology is far behind the leader, you had to find a way to catch up. Copying the design and reverse engineering of the leader is a way, but it is not the main purpose. The main purpose is to grasp the design of know-how and the manufacturing technology through reverse engineering, and improve the design and manufacturing technology step by step, finally, surpassing the original design and technology , creating your own design and more advanced technology.

    Japanese motor industry is following this way, Toyota is one the example. In 1950's and 1960's, Toyota cars were the copies of American cars. After a few years, Toyota started their own designs and developments as well as the famous TMS. In 1980's , Toyota started enter American market and getting a strong hold later. Now Toyota cars enjoy a very good reputation in American market and become a giant in the global motor industry.

    Kodak is the first digital camera maker and inventor (1975: Steven Sasson, then an electrical engineer at Kodak, invented a digital camera).
    Right now, Japanese Sony, Canon, Nikon as well as the other Japanese camera manufacturers are the main force of digital cameras market. And nobody will remember Kodak which had been closed its digital camera business for long time.

    Sorry very very bad examples

    Toyota has always design and built their own vehicle ... no copy from all the places - America

    And for Kodak is just bad decision - did sony, canon , nikon buy Kodak digital cameras - reversed engineered and improved on them? The answer is NO. They develop their products on their own!

    Pick better examples!

    And there is the problem! Reverse engineering only makes you able to re-create or modify that specific design, but won't get you the know how and learning experience of an own development. That's why China has mastered the Flanker design, but still is using foreign aircraft designs for new developments. Same goes for mastering the Su27 radar and engines, while still being dependent on Russia to provide foreign once for Su30 and 35. So surpassing Russia however, requires more than that and still will take some time.

    Chinese homemade J-16 and J-15 already surpass the Su-30MKK/MKI and Su-33. Ws-10A turbofan engines are already installed on J-11B, J-16, J-10C.

    The latest Chinese AESA radar Type 1475 on J-20 have 1856 T/R modules and is already in the same class of the AN/APG-81 on F-35. The Russian AESA technology is lag behind USA and China based on their weak semiconductor manufacturing and electronic industry.

    China still imports the AL-31 turbofan engines from Russia, because they are used on J-11, Su-30MKK, J-10A/B jet fighters which are still in the service. And these fighters have no need to upgrade for WS-10A engines as they are designed to use Russian AL-31 engines.

    By the same time , Chinese already invests a lot in WS-15 turbofan project, a few years away to use. And the WS-10B turbofan engine has just installed on the latest J-20 .

    The successful J-16 and J-10C jet fighter projects means Chinese has graduated from third generation Jet fighter design and manufacturing.

    J-20 and J-31 projects means that Chinese can design and manufacture forth generation jet fighters independently .
