    You must have misunderstood....
The ship in the foreground belongs to Coast Guards and Gessler actually wanted to show the ship in the background....

The basic design for Project 28 was specified by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design, with the detailed design by GRSE. The design includes many stealth features, including reductions in noise and vibration of the vessels.

Displacing around 3000 tons and a length of around 110 metres, these vessels will have a very high percentage of Indian made equipment – either designed indigenuously or built under license through technology transfer agreements.

The DMR 249A hull steel is produced locally by SAIL (Steel Authority of India Limited). The main machinery is raft mounted to reduce acoustic and vibration signatures. Each gear unit and the associated engines will be mounted on a common raft. The vessel will feature automated control and battle damage systems. The Project 28 vessels use diesel engines built by Pielstick of France. DCNS supplied the noise-suppressing raft-mounted gearbox for CODAD propulsion. Wärtsilä India will deliver the low-vibration diesel alternators to power the on-board electronics. Other signature management control features are built in to combat the ship’s infrared, radar-cross signature, noise and magnetic outputs. Two independent interconnected switchboards optimize redundancy and reliability.

It was announced on 21 December 2006 that GRSE awarded France’s DCNS a contract to provide a comprehensive engineering package of raft mounted Propulsion Power Transmission Systems (PPTS) for the four corvettes. Under the contract, DCNS will deliver four propulsion packages (consisting of eight reduction gear units on cradles and either thrust blocks) to GRSE. The company will also provide support to GRSE for the mechanical integration of the propulsion plant. DCNS is partnering with Walchandnagar Industries Limited, to provide the raft mounts and other components, including thrust blocks and systems auxiliaries. The first propulsion package was delivered in 2008, with the remaining three to follow at the rate of one per year until 2011.

Armament is to include a license-built Otobreda 76 mm Super Rapid gun in a stealth mount and the usual assortment of weapons similar to what is found on the Talwar class frigates and Shivalik class frigates including a Klub-N missile system in vertical launchers, two Larsen & Toubro built derivatives of the RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launcher, as well as Larsen & Toubro torpedo launchers. Revati, the naval variant of the DRDO-made Central Acquisition Radar (CAR), is a confirmed sensor aboard the vessel. Hangar and aviation facilities will also be standard features.

    @ brahmos ii

P-28 Kamorta does not carry any ASCMs. Thats a misreportation, its role is purely ASW warfare
to protect Indian coast, at least as of now. The P-28A may carry 8 x BrahMos-I but Im not sure.

    @ WMD

The first Kamorta-class corvette will come only by the middle of next year IMO. The first P-15A Kolkata-class
DDG will be handed over to IN probably in March 2013.

    thanx for the info
kamorta class doesn't have the klub missile system as said, because of it's specialized role as ASW corvette.
the P-28A will feature many improvement in the lines of P-17A FFG or P-15B DDG.(though capability of the 3 types will differ)
    @Gessler
as u said INS Kolkata will b commissioned in Mar'13, so i expect it is in advanced stages of completion.

You're right about all the rest but one thing - Kolkata will only be handed over to Navy in March 2013,
after which it needs to complete extensive sea trials under IN supervision spanning several months.

Only AFTER the sea trials conclude will it be commissioned. I estimate between
    August-October 2013.

The third Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW) Corvette for the Indian Navy (IN) designed under Project-28 (P-28) by the Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design, being built by one of India’s leading shipbuilders, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd.(GRSE), was launched here on Tuesday.

Named after an island – Kiltan – in the Lakshwadeep archipelago of India, the ASW Corvette was launched by Chitra Joshi from GRSE mainyard in the presence of Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral DK Joshi, Chairman and Managing Director, GRSE, Rear Admiral (Retd) A K Verma and other officials from the Ministry of Defence, Armed Forces and West Bengal administration.

With nearly 90 percent indigenisation content aimed to be achieved in the manufacturing of the ship, the efforts made by Indian Navy and Defence Shipyards towards the national goal of indigenisation and self-reliance got a major impetus with this latest ASW Corvette launch.

The Indian Navy also got closer to acquiring the ASW platforms that will stealthily seek and destroy lurking enemy submarines as the first GRSE built ASW Corvette, Kamorta, is expected to be delivered to IN this year. The remaining three ships, according to GRSE, will be delivered by 2016. The fourth ASW Corvette will be launched in 2014, GRSE CMD Rear Admiral Verma stated.

Lauding efforts of GRSE in detail designing of the ship, the Navy Chief singled out its technological landmark, as being the first ship in the country built with a composite superstructure. The superstructure made of carbon fibre composite material has been successfully integrated with the main hull of the ship. Besides reducing the top weight, it will provide improved stealth features and reduce life cycle maintenance costs.

The ship’s hull form is highly efficient with excellent sea-keeping and manoeuvrability characteristics having an overall length of 109 metres. The ship can cut through the sea at a very high speed of 25 Knots. Hull of the ship is built with warship grade high tensile indigenous steel.

The ship’s advanced stealth features will make her less susceptible to detection and help in effective deployment of soft kill measures. The ships will be fitted with complete indigenous state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, including a medium range gun, torpedo tube launchers, rocket launchers and close-in weapon system.

These ships are also equipped with a Bow mounted Sonar and are capable of deploying a helicopter, adding considerable punch to the ship’s anti-submarine capability. These ships also feature an advanced Integrated Platform Management System for controlling and co-ordinating the propulsion, auxiliary and power generation equipment.

The new P-28 ASW corvettes also mark many firsts including introduction of the ‘rail-less helo traversing system’ to handle a helicopter on board the ship, foldable hangar door, use of indigenous DMR 249A steel and carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) superstructure integrated with the steel hull of the ship.

From recently updated SIPRI trade register,
10 3M-54 Klub missile delivered in 2012 out of 50 ordered in 2003.

Hope this clears any confusion abt whether P-28s have anti-ship capability or not.

INS Kiltan, the Anti Submarine Warfare Corvette of the Indian Navy, designed under Project-28, was launched on March 26, 2013.

With nearly 90 percent indigenous content, the efforts made by Indian Navy and Defence Shipyards towards the national goal of indigenization and self-reliance got a major impetus with this latest ASW Corvette launch.

Hull of the ship is built with warship grade high tensile indigenous steel. The DMR 249A steel has been developed and produced by Steel Authority of India Limited.

DMR 249A is a low carbon low alloyed steel and the specified gas contents of hydrogen is less than 2 parts per million (PPM) that gives the customized strength and toughness.

3 Kamorta class corvettes. INS Kamorta(one on the left) looks complete.
The main gun might look different from what is aboard P-17 FFGs or P-15A DDGs but it is the same one.
    This is the gun
