During his hearing by the Defense Committee of the National Assembly, General André Lanate, Chief of Staff of the Air Force , considered that in air matters, the British are "very significantly Ahead of us. " He said: "The British have launched a relatively rapid and ambitious modernization of their air forces, which places them very far ahead of us. Their fleet of tankers is new and they already have 14 MRTT tankers when we only expect 12 (nine commanded only at this stage) while they are not in charge of the airborne deterrent mission. They are in the process of bringing the F-35 into service and will soon have a fleet of fighter aircraft composed solely of fourth and fifth generation aircraft (Eurofighter and F35) When ours will be made up of previous generations (Mirage 2000 and Rafale). They have six AWACS when we have only four. Their transport fleet is composed of a range of recent means (C130, C17, A400M). Their monitoring capabilities outnumber our own, since they include a number of long-endurance surveillance drones that are far superior to ours. In short, in the air field, the British have made an effort. It is often said that they are downgraded: this is not what I observe in the aerial domain. Mostly he is ruing the lack of support assets/force multipliers but this is interesting:

The first time I've seen French leadership even mentioning 5th gen a/c, the line from DA has always been that "stealth" is a PR stunt. Disparaging the Rafale like that is a pretty strange thing to do......

There is certainly some truth to that but what I was wondering is why this senior French officer would say something like this considering there is no chance France will buy the F-35, what exactly is he asking for? Expediting the French-German "next generation" fighter project?

He certainly doesn't seem to be asking for more Rafales......

The reason is more because of military threats and military involvements. UK was directly involved in Iraq and Afghanistan. While France was not.

France was not a invading force in Iraq neither in Afghanistan. But a ISAF force. At the peak of surge, UK deployed almost 10,000 troops in Afghanistan and for Iraq here are the details

France never faced such threats, so there is no requirement as such. Even the islands of French in IOR were/are vowed to be protected by India ( IG personally written letter to Francois Mitterrand, because of this letter France sold Mirage-2000 ).

France was involved in Afghanistan, and they are now involved in Iraq.

Who wants more money? Your Air Chief? sack Him for telling the truth that you have been fooling the world and your own countrymen by touting Rafale as a Fifth Gen Fighter.

Without DEDIRA, the Rafale is just a regular aircraft with very good EW.

Anyway, I think this has more to do with Macron cutting the defence budget. So someone had to tell him that their AF is going to shit without more money. Our people do that every other year.

Rafale's so called discrete jamming or active cancellation is nothing but a form of DRFM jamming and being a non stealthy aircraft it reaches a stage where in its burn thru range is huge forcing it to revert to traditional ways of jamming. I have always been a very vocal critic of the so called SPECRA abilities as things just do not add up in an RF threat environment.

Or perhaps it's just the case that he's not in the business of trying to flog planes.
