But at that time wasn't the F-15 cheaper than the Rafale? That's why the F-15 won. When they made the decision, the $ had become very weak. I think euro was 30-40% more expensive at the time.

    EDIT- Yeah, $1 = euro 0.8.

    Source Based News
    1. Reliance ADAG group's Business Restructuring for the whole group has been initiated
    2. De-leveraging is under implementation. Lots of Debts will be removed in order to become a full worthy partner of Dassault Group
    3. Tie up for MSME and SME will be initiated to form the part of the ecosystem
    4. To a specific query about other Indian projects - a part of ecosystem will supply components, off the shelf items and certain LRUs/modules to Tejas program as well.
    5. To a specific question about what kind of numbers are planned, the source said its a long program. First tranche is 36, but real MII tranche is 90 followed by upto 10 squadrons for IAF alone under MII. IN plan of 6+ squadrons are there for carriers+ others. Beyond this will be force mix and prevalent conditions as per the squadron strength.
    6. He was very happy that aerospace program will now see Rafale offshoot to 3 additional program - LCA Mk1A+ Navy project, future AMCA project and another jet engine project which he said is not officially declared.
    7. I queried is it famed Mk2 or is it another single engine fighter jet- his response was non committal but he did add- Reliance Defence is also looking to get into Unmanned Indian programs.
    8. Also to the newspaper reports of CAG kind of issues in future, he was pretty confident and pointed that business restructuring was towards the intended makeover and increase credibility among the people. He also pointed to the other aerospace major in single engine jet which gives lots of advertisement and articles (saab) their SP choice is not able to do business restructuring and reduce overall debts of the group (adani) and secondary partner has another European group connect (Mahindra). So its choice is a tough part and might as well include a PSU to play safe.
    9. He also revealed the big announcement for Falcon Jets will be made in due time. He said we will start like how tata makes parts and progress to full jet here in India itself.
    10. To my specific query of early induction as indicated earlier and declared by DM MP in media, source indicated the airframes are already under progress for sometime but the upgrade package is not yet ready at all for India.
    11. He said " from the present time period needed to build one Rafale of 30-36 months, as we increase production rate and our ecosystem in Merignac also support the same, we are in a position to churn out a new rafale at almost 50% of the earlier time needed"
    12. But the Indian specific conditions, kits and other upgrades as required for F3R customised standard, the final plane will be available approx 2 years from now give and take a couple of months both sides.
    13. So in his words, September 2018 should see a Rafale being handed over to Indian side.
    14. Queried on Saab GaN radar tech , he said foundries are still in Europe+USA. Actually its just access not the semiconductor level or metallurgical level tech thats being shared as it cant be shared in the first place. Its costly and IPR protected.. As and when GaN is available for RBE 2, the same will be offered to India as well. Anyways its in the roadmap of future upgrades.
    15. ADAG seems very content with what it has got and how its hands are full for a long time. And hence its not paying any attention to other "news" in the media any attention. It s focused in achieving a credible partnership with Dassault Group.

Where does the optional 18 fit into that? Not part of MII, no?

Design is Indian and it will be made in India but avionics will be from abroad.

You should make the avionics n Bharat itself. The first and foremost reason for indiginization is having own controlled fighter.

I was wondering, what goes into making avionics. Or what are the different suits in it?? Are there any open source avionics suits available??

Rafale fighter jet successfully performs first flight test with Thales' TALIOS pod

The new-generation TALIOS (TArgeting Long-range Identification Optronic System) laser targeting pod has successfully completed its 1st flight on a Rafale. Operated by Dassault Aviation at the Istres base as part of the F3R program, the prototype took off on July 27, mounted on a single-seater aircraft, for a flight lasting over 2 hours.

[IMG]Thales' TALIOS pod fitted on a Rafale fighter aircraft at Paris Air Show 2015

This test flight collected high-quality images taken using the “day” channel, and offered remarkable performances in pointing and telemetry.

Designed by Thales, TALIOS is the first optronic targeting pod to cover the entire decision chain, from intelligence gathering through to neutralization. With the latest-generation high-resolution infrared and electro-optical sensors, line-of-sight stabilization, and high performance image processing its capabilities range from deep strike with precision-guided munition, to air-to-air target identification and close air support, both during the day and at night.

The integration of the TALIOS pod, which will included on the French Air Force and Navy Rafales, is a major part of the F3R standard development on the Rafale combat aircraft. The success of the first TALIOS flight on a Rafale is the second key event in its development program for 2016, following on from the first flight on the Mirage2000 test bench aircraft. The TALIOS pod development and Rafale integration programs run in parallel. The adjustment and performance measurement tests will continue throughout 2017. They will lead both to the qualification of the equipment and to the qualification of the F3R standard for the Rafale by mid-2018.

The Military Programming Law 2014-2019 anticipates an order of 45 pods for the Air Force and the Navy, 20 of which have already been ordered from Thales by the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA). Delivery of the mass-produced equipment will start in 2018.

Probably not much difference, it's only there for watching the ground and aiming stuff, and both do the job fine.
