That's a joke, not a development. Someone just had fun in 2012 painting the Rafale with a lot of fancy liveries.

@randomradio @PARIKRAMA Guys, just one query.
It has been too silent on MII front for Rafales, also there is noise about Rafales M not being considered for Navy. Can you guys please confirm whether MII is on for this aircraft, or are we looking at another extended procurement nightmare?
    Thanks in advance.

Pretty interesting articles. It seems to echo what was said on these forums long ago...

The govt won't do much until demonetization is taken care of. The Strategic Partnership clause is yet to be released. I think they will choose a single engine jet for MII first followed by Rafale MII. Most likely they could announce the negotiations for both at the same time.

IN doesn't seem to be interested in the Rafale anymore. They are more interested in the larger American package with all sorts of support jets, unmanned aircraft, carrier tech etc that will come with the F-35B.

But there is still some potential for a squadron or two of Rafale-Ms also.

I don't think demonetisation has anything to do with this, both are separate processes handled by separate ministries. Any clue what might be holding up the strategic partnership clause for last few months. While the deal was going on, i was optimistic of it being out by now.
Secondly Rafale procurement process was independent of any other negotiation for single engine jet. Rafale and single jet, whichever it may be, are complimentary to each other, what could be the reason for delay? Is it to compare side by side what benefits are we getting from each manufacturer or something else?

I get the IN part though. Thanks for clarification.

No, the demonetization has nothing to do with defence deals. But it will be prudent to start negotiations or sign deals after the political infighting is finished. Nobody will want to release state policy like the SP clause right now.

The reason is because the SP clause is a significant event and political brownie points can be earned when Modi announces new schemes post-demonetization. It's all politics, so let it play out. We have already signed the GTG Rafale deal and are in a comfortable position. Any delay in the MII programs will result in fall back orders for the French-made Rafales. So the govt has bought a lot of time with the GTG.

Considering how quickly the GTG deal was signed, with offsets, the MII deals can be signed even earlier.

F-35B would be an odd choice for a navy that wants to get CATOBAR aircraft carriers. Though I guess it's expected to be cheaper than the C model thanks to a larger production run?

The F-35B is apparently the most expensive because of the modified engine with the lift fans. But it will give the navy Harrier type capability.

Harrier capability is what you want when you can't afford CATOBAR. It has no advantage otherwise. Forget everything about improvised forward bases or whatever, the F-35 is never going to be able to use them.
