Defence Minister Khawaja Asif confirmed on Saturday that General (retd) Raheel Sharif has been allowed to lead the 34-nation Islamic military alliance.

On January 6, the defence minister said that the former chief of army staff had been appointed as chief of Islamic military alliance and posted in Saudi Arabia. The government, he had said, was taken into confidence about the ex-army chief’s new role.

However, in a shift from his earlier statement on January 11, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that General (retd) Raheel Sharif did not seek government’s permission before joining the alliance.

Raheel Sharif named chief of Islamic military coalition, says Khawaja Asif

“The government has given its consent and it has been decided in principle that General (retd) Raheel will go there [Saudi Arabia] to lead the alliance],” Asif told Geo News.

“A formal process in this regard is yet to be completed,” the minister said when asked if the former army chief had requested for a no- objection certificate (NOC).

The defence minister further said that the Saudi government had in writing requested Pakistan for Gen Raheel’s services. When asked if the former COAS had also asked the government for a permission, Asif replied, “[It was not needed after] the two countries have had an agreement.”

Raheel Sharif did not seek govt approval to join Saudi alliance: Khawaja Asif

The minister termed it only a matter of time before the former army chief leaves for Saudi Arabia to “put a structure in place for the alliance”. There isn’t any structure [of the alliance] as yet and Gen Raheel will adopt a framework after arriving in the country,” Asif added.

Asif went on to say that a body comprising defence ministers of all member countries of the alliance, to serve as an advisory council, is expected to hold its first meeting in May.

In 2015, the oil-rich kingdom had announced the formation of the coalition to combat terrorism and Pakistan was made a member of the coalition. Riyadh and its Gulf Arab neighbours have been locked in months of warfare with Iran-allied rebels in Yemen, launching hundreds of air strikes there.

Middle East did nothing good to any country , war or no war.
Edited: There is no common interests in middle east. Just Suadi led Sunni alliance for hiring foot soldiers.
    Better focus on China IMO

What is the intent behind this coalition?

And what relation should one draw with the role of Saudi Arabia and Oman along with Turkey and the present posturing by Erdogan?

Saudi, Turkey plus China behind the scene and Pakistan wants to build alliance for their own respective needs.

ISIS is Saudi Arabia's own creation: everyone and his dog knows that.

As for Iran, I think that Pakistan caught itself in a bind. The last time when SA asked for Pakistani assistance in intervention in Yemen, and Pakistan dithered, there was a clear situation created brilliantly exploited by Modi. Result was there for all to see.

With an aim to secure it's interests in Afghanistan, Pakistan played the Iran card a tad early. Now it is trying a balancing act. Interesting.

I am amazed at the Pakistani propensity to assume Chinese as allies. You really need to read up and understand the Chinese. They have no truck with a potential combination which is a powder keg - aka Muslim question.

Even they are pragmatic to realise the threat of radical Islam and the responsible nations - including your own country.

Modi has nothing to do with it and neither Pakistan played any card, They milked US in past far more clever than Saudis In fact army put some conditions which Saudis refuses to accept but now with mediator like Raheel Sharif they agreed.

Raheel left Pak Army with a blot on his face when India did surgical strikes. Such a looser can only find job with another looser like Arab forces.

You really need to read up .... stop living the lie of 'CIA created mess'

Suggest start reading about Pakistan - Afghan relationships since the day of Inception of Pakistan ... and the role of Afghans in supporting Baluch and Pashtun movements in Pakistan and your hearty reciprocity.

Also, please do collate the Iranian and Iraqi angle is furthering trouble in Pakistan.

CIA was second fiddle. Suggest read the excellent book "Afghanistan:The Bear Trap" as also collate with Pakistani intervention in supporting armed factions in Afghanistan prior to even Soviet Intervention.

    A mythical surgical strikes...Right

Not a single proof of that exist even your former D.M said that these strikes carried out by invisible Hanuman Sena.

Is this for real or joke.

Any video or pictures as proof ? no
    Why ? No
Since cameras can't capture invisible hanuman forces.
