Ranjan Mathai to be India's next foreign secretary

Ranjan Mathai, India's ambassador to France, will be the next foreign secretary, succeeding Nirupama Rao.

Ranjan Mathai, a 1974-batch IFS officer, will assume charge from August 1 and will be there for a term of two years, official spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said.

After completing post graduate studies in Political Science at the University of Pune, Mathai joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1974.

He has served in Indian embassies in Vienna, Colombo, Washington, Tehran and Brussels.

As joint secretary in the ministry of external affairs in New Delhi between January 1995 to February 1998, Ranjan Mathai headed the division dealing with India's relations with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Maldives.

He also served as Indian ambassador to Israel from February 1998 to June 2001 and was the Indian ambassador in Qatar from August 2001 to July 2005.

Mathai held the post of Deputy High Commissioner of India to the UK in London from August 2005 to January 2007.

Rao, who is retiring on July 31, has been appointed as India's ambassador to the United States.

Ranjan Mathai takes charge as foreign secretary

Ranjan Mathai took over as the new Foreign Secretary of the country on Monday.

The 1974-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer took over the charge for a two-year term from Nirupama Rao, who has been appointed India's Ambassador to the United States.

Soon after assuming charge, Mathai said he would "try and work to restore confidence, that is our mandate" referring to Indo-Pak relations.

"We (India and Pakistan) have to try and work to restore trust and confidence. This is the mandate which has been given to me. Foreign secretary is as much an institution as an individual. So I will continue this effort," he said.

Fifty-nine-year-old Mathai was India's Ambassador to France since January 2007. He was earlier Indian ambassador to Israel from February 1998 to June 2001 and from August 2001 to July 2005 served as the ambassador to Qatar.

Prior to that, he has served in Indian embassies in Vienna, Colombo, Washington, Tehran and Brussels. He was a joint secretary in the ministry of external affairs (MEA) from January 1995 to February 1998.

On the other side, Rao retired on Sunday. Post-retirement she would take a high profile special assignment of India's ambassador to the US. She replaces Meera Shankar.

    Challenges for Mathai

Mathai's job is not going to be easy. The first and foremost challenge for him would be relations with Pakistan. Like Rao, he would have to closely follow the developments on 26/11 Mumbai attacks trial in Pakistan.

Sino-Indian relations would also need Mathai's special attention. Apart from that, the developing security scenario in Afghanistan, where the American and European troops are preparing to move out, would also need the new foreign secretary's attention.

The political situation in another neighbouring country Nepal would also need special focus.
