Religious teaching in Govt. School is wrong. But Gita is not a religious book. The fundamental folly of the argument is for anyone with any sort of knowledge about Gita will know. Gita is a philosophical treatise. It is 18 chapters and 745 verses (though 700 verses in the abridged version) of Mahabharata, which is the world's largest epic and is taught in every school in India as well as abroad. If you study Mahabharata, which is like Illiad or Odyssey and leave out Gita which is part of the same book then that is hypocrisy.

Gita is not the Vedas or Upanishads, which are legitimate religious books. What the minister said is wrong to begin with but the arguments against Gita is even more ridiculous as it is not even a religious book.

The fact of the matter is that all member in IDF are strictly against compulsory imposition of religious books/course in schools and this stand is the most appropriate one. If the child is interested to know, he can find various ways to learn about his or others religion in society, why he has to be shown the window to look through. When he would be mature enough he can choose what he wants to know!

No politics in these matters please.

    Who cares to be honest.

As long as people like Nair saab [a muslim] defends hard liner hindu and other members [majority hindus] condemn such moves. :) Our religious harmony and secularism is quite evident. :D

I am happy with this development, at least some "upper caste" have started to realise the disadvantage of not teaching "Hindu scriptures" to non-Brahmins/kshatriya !
But teaching Gita alone in School is not enough, their should be separate University (like in ancient times),
Bhagvat Gita is just a hindu scripture among these,

    Hindu scriptures:

    Vedas
    Rigveda · Yajurveda · Samaveda · Atharvaveda
    Divisions
    Samhita · Brahmana · Aranyaka · Upanishad

    Upanishad
    Aitareya · Brihadaranyaka · Isha · Taittiriya · Chandogya · Kena · Maitri · Mundaka · Mandukya · Katha · Kaushitaki · Prashna · Shvetashvatara

    Vedanga
    Shiksha · Chandas · Vyakarana · Nirukta · Jyotisha · Kalpa

    Mahakavya (epics)
    Mahabharata · Ramayana

    Other scriptures
    Smriti · Śruti · Bhagavad Gita · Purana · Agama · Darshana · Pancharatra · Tantra · Akilathirattu · Sūtra · Stotra · Dharmashastra · Divya Prabandha · Tevaram · Ramacharitamanas · Shikshapatri · Vachanamrut · Ananda Sutram

Taking it a step further now, Hindu Of Universe has an informative side by side comparison of the six major schools of Hindu thoughts (Hindu philosophy) from nature of:-

THAT MEMBER only said that there is no constitutional restriction in Religious Teaching in Minority Schools/Unaided schools. (Though the reference wasn't convincing)

I have been told by many scholars who are educated enough to understand above text is that the "Hindu Scriptures" is not really explored very well, It's HUGE pool of knowledge which could be used practically in future. Ayrveda, Yoga are few examples. Some thinks these are Actually "abstract" of very large research work done in ancient times.
