Royal Navy Could Lose Both HMS Albion & HMS Bulwark in Latest Defense Cuts

The Royal Navy could be stripped of its ability to attack enemy-held beaches under cost-cutting plans.

The Senior Service could see its two amphibious assault ships, HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark, taken out of service in a new round of cuts to the Armed Forces, the BBC's Newsnight claimed.

It said such a move, which the Ministry of Defence described as "pure speculation", would save money and free up crew for the two new aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales.

It comes days after Sir Michael Fallon, the Defence Secretary, used a speech at the Conservative Party Conference to call for an increase in defence funding as his ministry announced a £1billion support package for the Royal Navy fleet.

Newsnight reported that the plan, coupled with the loss of 1,000 Royal Marines, had alarmed senior commando officers.

The loss of Albion, a former flagship of the Royal Navy, and Bulwark would leave the Navy without a dedicated amphibious assault ship.

Beach landings in areas where the enemy controls the harbours have been used in many modern conflicts.

In his speech on Tuesday, Sir Michael said the Armed Forces must "modernise" the way it worked.

He said that as threats "intensify", his department was "now looking right across government to make sure we are doing enough, spending enough, to properly protect our country against all of those threats - cyber, hybrid warfare, rogue states, terrorist attacks."

An MOD spokesman said: "In the face of ever-changing threats, we are contributing to the cross-government review of national security capabilities and looking at how we best spend our rising defence budget to support that.

"No decisions have yet been made and at this stage, any discussion of the options is pure speculation."

Don't know if there's any truth in these plans but apparently the RN's Rear Admiral Alex Burton, commander of the UK's maritime forces, has handed his resignation over these developments, which adds credence to say they are indeed planning to scrap these two ships, and possibly isn't just speculation:

If these cuts happen, together with the HMS Ocean's early retirement next year, then down the years it could result in the QECs having entirely too much to do for just 2 ships (and in operation only one is likely to be available at any given time while the other is in refit/maintenance).

@BMD Is it likely for RN to have plans for new LHD/LPD-classes post-2020? For sure they can't rely on having just 1 ship on call for carrying out any kind of expeditionary and/or support missions? I'd think once the two QECs are in service, it should free up budgets to buy a new class of amphibious docks.

Well, as stated, this is 'pure speculation' at the moment and £1bn in extra funding doesn't really tie in with cuts.

What I don't get is why would a serving Rear Adm. (and the Commander of Maritime forces) resign over speculation? Either this IS gonna happen, or possibly he's one touchy Rear Adm.

Speculations are running high as of now,but sources say that the army could lose an armoured infantry brigade and that the army's air corps could lose four squadrons.

HMS Albion and Bulwark could be axed as well as the number of Royal Marines.

Do the maths, jobs and people are leaving. The two negate each other. What you haven't seen yet is the affect on EU exports to the UK when WTO tariffs kick in. People have been two busy trying to create an image of terror for UK citizens to explain the affects on the other side.

The MoD is facing a "black hole" to plug in its finances, some estimate to be as large as £20 billion to £30 billion over the next 10 years.

The fall of the pound, rising cost of equipments and inability to find savings have been cited to be the main causes.

You were criticizing the Labour, however from what I see,it is well the Tories that are destroying Britain's armed forces and security forces.
