Its licence production as of now. First few units will be fully SKD Kits. As more orders are placed aim is to fully indigenise [use of Indian Raw materials]full chassis , its turret , its engine and its canon. Not sure about its FCS and electronics though.

L&T Signs Contract with Korea's Hanwha Techwin for 'Make In India' Artillery Guns

L&T and Hanwha Techwin have come together to manufacture K9 VAJRA-T in India as part of the 'Make in India' policy

Larsen & Tourbo, one of India's largest private defence companies, has inked a contract with South Korea's Hanwha Techwin to manufacture 155mm/ 52 Cal Tracked Self Propelled (SP) Gun for the Indian Army. L&T was declared as the sole qualified bidder, post User Evaluation Trials, based on the performance of the K9 VAJRA-T, a self-propelled howitzer. The first RFP was issued in 2007 but was retracted and after that two more RFPs were issued, with L&T emerging the winner in 2011.

Jayant Patil, Head of Defence and Aerospace and Member of Heavy Engineering Board at L&T, said: The government had said that only the foreign bidder must bid. The Korean company stood up and said that it would not bid. This is a matter of belief system that an Indian program could only be won with what our Deputy Chief of Army has being saying, 'with Indian solutions'. So it's Indian solutions which will make a difference."

“This contract marks an important milestone in L&T’s Defence Business journey and in our relationship with Hanwha Techwin. It will create synergies not only for this program but also for upcoming Indian and global programs. This also marks a giant step forward towards furthering the “Make in India” vision of the Government of India. L&T plans to begin production of this weapon system at its Strategic Systems Complex at Talegaon near Pune in Maharashtra and deliver the first batch of 10 guns. L&T also has initiated setting up of a greenfield manufacturing line at Hazira, Gujarat, with a state-of-the-art test track, to produce, test and qualify the K9 VAJRA-T guns,” he further added.

Commenting on L&T's partnership with Hanwha Techwin, Patil said that the real success in this joint model is that of a very strong partnership. "It is a dream relationship but this partnership is a program specific partnership. Obviously, there is a choice to go with other projects, based on an existing program, but one which is highly customizable."

While most of the systems will be executed in India, the barrel, breach, muzzle and engine will be imported. The hull, turret, electronic systems, fire control systems, air conditioning will be indigenous. The most sophisticated and complex systems will involve night vision and direct line of sight capabilities. Unlike other artillery guns, this one will have direct fire capabilities to seek the enemy positions up to 5 kilometers.

Patil further added, "We are delivering 100 systems in 42 months. Without customization, the gun would not have met specific nuances of the Indian Army which wanted a desert specific weapon. We'll be delivering first of the guns in this financial year. The idea is to first send a batch of 10 guns and then the subsequent 90. This is a differentiated gun but from the RFP to fielding the K9 VAJRA-T, we did it in 18 months."

    FCS will be Indian.

Impressive delivery timelines- all 100 units in 3.5 years and first guns within the next 12 months.

M777 deliveries also commence this year (as well as Dhanush?) , quite the turn around of the state of the IA's arty, now just need to get the MGS deal closed @Ankit Kumar 001 @MilSpec @PARIKRAMA

TNWs are not needed in India's war doctrine.

M777 , K9 and Dhanush 155/45 guns on delivery from this year.

The M777 and K9 deal will take up quite large sum from Army's portion this year. I don't expect anything on MGS this year.

I don't expect it to be signed but they should at least move foreward to the next stage(s), AFAIK it hasn't gone anywhere for years. Not even L1 has been declared.
