Russia and the United Arab Emirates will get down to joint work on a future light 5th generation jet on the basis of MiG-29 as of 2018, the chief of Russia’s Rostec corporation, Sergey Chemezov, told the media on Feb. 20.

"We believe we shall start working on this plane as of next year. It will take seven to eight years to develop," Chemezov said on the sidelines of the international weapons show IDEX-2017.

"A future fifth generation plane will be created on the basis of Russia’s Mig-29," he added.

Earlier, Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said that Russia and the UAE had concluded an agreement on industrial cooperation in military engineering, which enabled them to launch a fifth generation fighter project.

The head of the United Aircraft Corporation Yuri Slyusar said the work on the plane was at the initial phase and Russia was in the process of drafting proposals. The UAC would participate in the project as the leader organization, and Sukhoi and MiG as co-contributors.

RUSSIA, UAE TO DEVELOP LIGHT FIGHTER BASED ON MIG-29 JET
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2017 BY INDIANDEFENSE NEWS

Russia and the UAE have concluded an initial agreement to develop a light fighter aircraft based on the MiG-29 jet.
Work could start next year on the project which aims to manufacture in Russia and assemble in the UAE, Sergei Chemezov, the CEO of ROSTEC, the state-owned conglomerate which controls several Russian defense enterprises, told reporters at the IDEX 2017 show in Abu Dhabi.
He did not reveal who the partner would be from the UAE side. The Gulf state has been trying to enter into the defense and aviation manufacturing sector and has several partnerships mainly with Western manufacturers.
Demand for low-priced fighter jets in increasing in the region in the face of increasing asymmetric which do not have sophisticated defensive systems to detect and bring down fighter jets.
The low end of the fighter jet market has been taken by the Chinese-Pakistani JF-17 aircraft which has made sales in Nigeria besides Pakistan and is knocking at the door of several Gulf nations.
A Russian source said that countries in the Middle East had started to look at Russian weapons and aircraft seriously after its involvement in the Syrian conflict.

It is based on Mig29/35 platform. Just like Sukhoi corp converted Flanker SU-30/35 to PAKFA, MIG corp. is coverting MIG-29/35 to a stealth fighter. In a way it would medium weight fighter and not light one like LSA.

LSA being inherently smaller would be superior in stealth feature and with amount of internal fuel and weapons capacity it should be able to punch above its weight.

It's not based on the Mig-29, it's a new stealth fighter.

What the official said is the fighter will be designed as a Mig-29/Rafale/Typhoon class fighter, ie, a MMRCA.

Russia finally has a new cash cow lol.

PS:- After the consolidations in Russian defence industry and Sukhoi and Mig coming under one umbrella organisation, I was not expecting 2 5th gen projects so soon.

But I think the dismal performance of Mig29 and Mig35 at exports and worsening situation at Mig forced them to start on the next project early on.

However if they can't get rid of the smoky [and highly unreliable ] twins powering the present Migs, it won't succeed much.

    Yes correct.

We need to take note of one thing which discussing Russian Airforce terms with that of western ones is the size.

Russians call Mig29 , the lighter complimentary partner of bigger Flankers. But actually the Mig29 is as big as F15.

So when the Russians say light => it actually means medium !

I mean what will be the scale of this project ? UAE could hardly buy 100 & Russia is not going to buy them, I think it is economically not viable to start such project.

But who cares, after all its a kingdom and runs on oil money.

It's being developed for the export market. So UAE won't be the only customer.

When I read the headline, I thought Russia is posturing to try and get us to move on the PAK FA project with the veiled threat of potentially taking the project to another partner.

This is a non-starter based on the time-lines.
Mig does not have the capability in its current state to design an all new fighter mainly due to the eroding of its human resources.

Most of the Russian origin engineers ( the supply lines ) who previously worked for one of the big 3 in SU , now works either in Boeing or in their cheaper Chinese counterparts.

This is a way back analysis which has further developed

The Boeing Company has taken advantage of the collapse. Its Moscow design center, which it opened with 10 Russian scientists in 1992, now employs about 650 engineers, scientists and computer specialists from Russia's biggest aircraft design bureaus.

Boeing contracts with the Russian companies, including Ilyushin and Tupolev, which are then able to pay salaries as much as 10 times the average Russian designer's pay of $200 to $500 a month.

Western manufacturers are drawn to Russia by its highly qualified work force, executives said. Russian engineers, who generally are used to improve designs for existing airplanes rather than develop new products, are also relatively inexpensive. Russia is the only country outside the United States where Boeing operates such a center, though the company said last week that it would open a small research center in Madrid to develop environmental and air traffic management technologies. Boeing also relies on subcontractors, many of which do some of their own design work, from all over the world.

Except IRKUTSK and KNAPPO funding aswell as desire is limited from the Russian Source. Best Mig can do is come up with an upgrade to MIG29/35 platform.
