    MOSCOW, April 25 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s fifth-generation T-50 fighter jet will enter service with the country’s armed forces in 2016, and not 2015 as was previously announced, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

    “The T-50 fifth generation jet should go into serial production and enter service in 2016,â€￾ Putin said at a live Q&A session with the Russian public.

    The Defense Ministry had earlier said the jet would be ready in 2015.

    Russia will start state flight tests of the T-50 in 2014, United Aircraft Corporation's President Mikhail Pogosyan said on Tuesday.

    The T-50, also known as PAK-FA (future tactical fighter aircraft), first flew in January 2010 and was presented to the public at the Moscow Air Show in 2011.

    The T-50, which will be the core of Russia's future fighter fleet, is a fifth-generation multirole fighter aircraft featuring elements of "stealth" technology," super-maneuverability, super-cruise capability (supersonic flight without use of afterburner), and an advanced avionics suite including an X-band active phased-array radar.

    India will also buy a fighter aircraft based on the T-50, known as the FGFA (fifth-generation fighter aircraft).

    United Aircraft Corporation is the state holding company uniting Russia's aircraft building industry including Sukhoi, a military and civil aircraft manufacturer.

    NIZHNY NOVGOROD, April 24 (RIA Novosti) – The Nizhny Novgorod-based Sokol aircraft manufacturer said on Wednesday it will develop a light aircraft for training air force pilots.

    The order for the development of a new training aircraft came from Air Force commander Lt. Gen. Viktor Bondarev earlier this year.

    The new aircraft will be a modernized two-seat version of the M-101T Gzhel utility turboprop aircraft, the company said.

    The M-101T Gzhel was Russia’s first high-speed multirole turboprop able to use unpaved airfields. The original Gzhel has a seating capacity of six and a maximum speed of 430 kilometers per hour.

    Sokol manufactured Gzhel planes from 2003-2009, but halted production due to a lack of commercial demand. Just fifteen of the planes were built.

    The aircraft manufacturer previously said the modernized Gzhel will have twin engines, a longer range and higher altitude.

    MOSCOW, April 11 (RIA Novosti) – The Russian Air Force is hoping to receive a new long-range fighter-interceptor by 2020 and retire its existing fleet of MiG-31 interceptors by 2028, Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. Viktor Bondarev said on Thursday.

    “We have started development of a new aircraft of this type and I think we can develop this plane before the state armament program ends in 2020,” Bondarev said at a meeting with Russian lawmakers.

    “The new plane should replace the existing fleet by 2028,” he said.

    Bondarev spoke out against restarting production of the MiG-31, which was stopped 20 years ago, saying the country needs a totally new interceptor to meet modern requirements.

    The Russian Air Force has 122 MiG-31 interceptors in service and more aircraft in reserve, he said.

    The MiG-31, the fastest fighter-interceptor in service anywhere in the world, has recently been the subject of a comprehensive upgrade to MiG-31BM standard.

    The MiG-31BM has a range of 900 miles (1,450 km) on internal fuel, which can be extended to 3,355 miles (5,400 km) with air-to-air refueling.

    The modernized version boasts upgraded avionics and digital data-links, a new multimode radar, color multifunction cockpit displays, and a more powerful fire-control system. It can simultaneously track up to 10 targets.

    The two-seat MiG-31 can intercept targets up to 124 miles (200 km) away thanks to its advanced radar and long-range missiles. The Air Force said in 2012 it was testing a new long-range missile for the MiG-31, which analysts who spoke to RIA Novosti said was likely to be the K-37M, also known as RVV-BD (NATO AA-X-13 Arrow).

    The Russian Air Force has previously said it intends to take delivery of up to 60 MiG-31BMs by 2020, under a contract signed with United Aircraft Corporation in 2011.

    A conference dedicated to operation of Su-34 aircraft by Russian air forces was held at Baltimor air base in Voronezh, press-service of Sukhoi Company reports.

    Representatives of United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), Sukhoi Company, 1st Command of the Air Forces and Air Defense Forces, military units operating Su-34 aircraft and top-managers of 11 enterprises (developers and manufacturers of the jet’s components). According to the company, the primary objective of the conference was to take coordinated decisions aimed at maintaining high combat readiness and assimilation of the jet’s tactical employment.

    «The problems related to flight operation of Su-34 aircraft, maintenance and maintainability, quality of the jet, warranty and post-warranty service, reliability and condition of the operated jets were discussed during the conference», - Sukhoi Company reported.

    The jet has been operated by Russian air forces since 2012. About 50% of the jets have a flying time of 200-250 hours. Representatives of flying and technical engineer personnel of the air forces expressed a high opinion of the aircraft. It was confirmed during the conference that the major indicator of the jet’s reliability (time between failures) meets the claimed indicators. At that, it was noted that some new approaches to a problem of maintaining the combat readiness of Su-34 fleet specified by the command of the air forces are required during the surge period, said in the statement.

    Following the results of the conference a protocol was signed. The protocol assumes taking steps in order to improve the jet’s performance, ergonomics and operating characteristics, its condition, reliability and service life.

    Moscow, April 25. Air Force pilot of the Chkalov Flight Test Center made a PAK FA test flight for the first time. The plane took off the airfield of the M.M.Gromov Flight Research Institute in the city of Zhukovsky (Moscow region). The system and equipment testing went on for two hours in accordance with the flight test program. The flight was a success, in full conformity with the flight mission.

    Presently four planes undergo flight tests. Two more aircraft are engaged in ground experimental missions — one plane is a complex ground test stand and the other undergoes static tests. The fifth PAK FA aircraft will join the flight test program in the second half of 2013. Construction of that plane at the Sukhoi’s aircraft plant — Y.A.Gagarin KnAAZ in Komsomolsk-on-Amur is almost complete.

    AKHTUBINSK (Astrakhan Region, south Russia), May 7 (RIA Novosti) - Tests of Russia’s fifth-generation T-50 fighter jets in the Chkalov state flight test center in Akhtubinsk, Astrakhan Region in south Russia may start in July, Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. Viktor Bondarev said.

    “In two months,â€￾ he said Monday when asked when the center would start tests of such jets, adding that the first serial fifth-generation jet may be manufactured in 2014-2015.

    United Aircraft Corporation President Mikhail Pogosyan said in April Russia will start state flight tests of the T-50 in 2014.

    По его словам, в интересах армейской авиации необходимо проведение исследований по обеспечению концепции и технического облика перспективного скоростного боевого винтокрылого летательного аппарата. Его создание обусловлено необходимостью повышения боевых возможностей для командований на стратегических направлениях, а также в арктической зоне.

    Также необходимо проведения исследований по определению количества и качества комплексов с беспилотными летательными аппаратами большой и средней дальности, интеграции их в перспективную систему вооружений ВВС. Кроме того, необходимо открытие работ по созданию специализированного самолета-разведчика в интересах группировок войск на стратегических направлениях, дополнил А.Зелин.

    По его сведениям, в период 2021-2025 годы ВВС запланировано создание перспективного штурмовика и легкого многофункционального фронтового самолета. Также предусмотрены работы по созданию и производству ряда специальных, транспортных, учебно-боевых и иных по назначению самолетов.

    По мнению А.Зелина, на сегодня складывается хороший потенциал для совершенствования системы боевых средств. В частности, планируется создание и закупка перспективного самолета-заправщика, создание и закупка перспективного истребителя фронтовой авиации Т-50, истребителей поколения 4++ Су-35 и МиГ-35, перспективного самолета-штурмовика, среднего транспортного десантного вертолета, легкого и среднего военно-транспортных самолетов и ряда других. Уже запущены в серию вертолеты Ми-28Н и Ка-52, самолеты Су-34, Як-130, вертолеты Ми-8МТВ-5, Ми-8АМТШ, ведется модернизация Ту-160, Ту-95, Ту-22, Су-25, МиГ-31, Ил-78М.

    LUKHOVITSY, May 31 (RIA Novosti) – Russian military aircraft maker MiG is to go ahead with a research-and-development project for an unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) based on its Skat prototype, after signing a deal with the Industry and Trade Ministry earlier this month, the firm said Friday.

    "We signed an R&D contract for UCAVs on May 15," said MiG's head, Sergei Korotkov. "The contract requirements include a mock-up for a future UCAV for the Defense Ministry. We are already ahead on this, based on our Skat program."

    MiG unveiled a demonstrator model of its Skat drone at the MAKS airshow near Moscow in 2007. Skat is designed to carry out strike missions on stationary targets, especially air defense systems in high-threat areas, as well as mobile land and sea targets.

    Skat will operate in autonomous modes as well as in conjunction with other manned systems, MiG says.

    A "flying wing" design, Skat has a projected weight of 10 tons, a two-ton payload, a range of 2,500 miles (4,000 km), a speed of 500 mph (800 km/h) and a ceiling of 36,000 feet (12,000 m).

    MiG also plans to sign a contract in June with the Defense Ministry for 37 MiG-35 multirole fighter jets, Korotkov said, with delivery of 24 of them to take place in "the near future."

    MOSCOW, June 3 (RIA Novosti) – Unmanned air vehicles (UAV), ground-based robotic systems and unmanned submersibles which Russian industry is developing for the Defense Ministry, are inferior to foreign analogs, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Monday.

    Military robotic systems are under development as part of the state weapons program for 2011-2020, Shoigu said at a ministry conference call on Monday.

    But “by their performance characteristics, [robotic] systems created for the Defense Ministry’s needs are inferior to their foreign analogs,” he said.

    “At the same time, domestically-made robotized systems are successfully used by our law-enforcement agencies,” he said.

    Shoigu also criticized defense enterprises for frequent delays in carrying out their work, which in turn affects the quality of robotic systems.

    “This is due to the technological backwardness of enterprises, weak organization of state contract fulfillment and a shortage of skilled personnel,” Shoigu said.

    The Russian Army is through with the first stage of testing of a multipurpose fifth generation T-50 fighter jet. T-50 has been through years of research and hundreds of flights. Many of the plane’s performance characteristics are still a secret. According to the designers, what is not a secret is the fact that T-50 is better in terms of basic parameters than its foreign-made equivalents.

    When one sees a T-50 in the air, the first idea that occurs to one is that planes just cannot fly like this, but if the plane is manned by a seasoned pilot, it will perform no end of stunts.

    Modern-day combat planes will never again be what they used to be. Now it is a jet-fighter, an attack plane and a bomber all in one; a plane that can accomplish any mission. T-50 is a fifth generation plane, which means it is invisible to enemy radars; it means it’s the fastest plane, with the maximum speed exceeding 2,500 kilometres per hour; it means the plane is equipped with artificial intelligence (that is the aircraft thinks over and performs missions that the pilot was to take care of earlier).

    According to a test pilot, Hero of Russia Sergei Bogdan, the pilot may abandon all of his controls on barely taking off, without even activating the auto-flight mode; the aircraft will never dive, but will maintain its horizontal flight. The plane may even start falling tail first, in which case it will by all means warn the pilot of the situation.

    If something happens to the pilot during the flying mission, the jet fighter will be able to return to the base and even land there on its own. It is actually quite true that the T-50 offers its pilots many things on a silver platter. One such thing is an automatic target recognizer.

    The jet fighter’s cover is suggestive of a living organism; it reacts to whatever happens around due to special transmitting-receiving elements that are virtually sewn into the jet-fighter’s body. This is also known as a smart cover.

    Prior to T-50, it was the US F-22 Raptor, which was seen as the world’s smartest fifth generation jet fighter. But the Russian fighter plane is ahead of its US equivalent in several ways, namely T-50 is faster than F-22 Raptor by 500 kilometres per hour, it is lighter but can flight to greater distances. But the most important about T-50 is its equipment, which is hidden inside the aircraft. The PAK FA (another way of referring to T-50, meaning literally a ‘Prospective Airborne Complex of Frontline Aviation’, made more than 500 flights in the years of secret testing. The designers have agreed that the flights have been normal.

    The first deputy of the Chief Designer of the SUKHOI Designing Office, Mikhail Strelets, says the designers had understandably sought to attain a certain performance level, and he believes they have attained at the first stage what objectives were planned to be attained for that stage. Some flight characteristics are even better than expected, like a very good sustained supersonic cruise and super-manoeuvrability.

    The achievements are largely due to the aircraft design, namely a small fin and no angles between surfaces. The arms will be stuffed into the interior, since the air reaction during manoeuvring is lower, and it is more difficult to spot the aircraft because of its special cover.

    “We can now counter any threats, posed by our potential enemies. Our airborne complex will prove in no way inferior to the fifth-generation complexes built in the United States, conversely, it will prove superior to them.     Before pilots actually get at the control-wheel rim of the T-50, they are through a course of training at a special simulation centre. Even the catapult system is a whole new story, taking account of the weight of a pilot, flight speed etc, to ensure that the pilot will leave the plane safely.

    Four T-50 jet fighters are already through with their test programme. Another one will be added to them by the end of the year. Batch manufacturing of T-50s is due to begin by 2015.

    I wonder what it will look like. I hope it will be derived from PAK-FA or MiG- 1.44 platforms optimized
    for high-altitude high-speed ops.
