The new-generation Medved' armoured vehicle, named after the animal synonymous with Russia, is the result of years of effort to develop a more powerful and flexible APC. It features innovative new protection from firearms, and holds up to eight crew members

Moscow hosted the Army 2016 International Military Forum in September 2016. The Forum is one of the world's largest exhibitions of armaments. Besides traditional tanks and combat aircraft, a new type of armed vehicle dazzled the guests: Russia’s next-generation Medved' armoured personnel carrier (medved' means “bear” in Russian – RIR).

Located in the Voenno-Promyshlennaya Kompaniya stand, the vehicle’s name is no accident. Almost six metres long and two metres wide, the silhouette of the armoured vehicle can be easily recognized. The APC’s height is almost three times that of an ordinary light car. Its mass (12 tons) can be compared to that of a light tank. The Medved' can hold a crew of up to eight people, excluding the driver. They will be protected by the vehicle’s highly durable armour.

    Emphasis on the armour
The builders of the “Bear” paid special attention to the armour, whose design features a significant contemporary design: A small air cushion between two layers of metal, which considerably reduces the force of armour-piercing bullets. There is scope to further strengthen the armour in future. Consequently, the Medved' today is one of the most strong, bullet-proof armoured vehicles in the world. Even the glass and the door slots remained intact during testing.

The Medved’s armaments make it practically a universal armoured vehicle. It has no stationary weapons. Depending on the situation, various types of weapons can be mounted on its moveable platform, from mixed-calibre machine guns to anti-tank guided missiles. What we have in the end is not a piece of hardware designed purely for the army or the police, but a vehicle that can be used in almost all combat conditions.

    Lessons from the Chechen War
The necessity of building a new-generation armoured vehicle became apparent after battles in hot spots, particularly in the North Caucasus, revealed that the old armoured vehicles were easily destroyed by mines and lacked any powerful weaponry.

As a result, tanks had to perform the functions of the APCs in those battles, something that is both impractical and risky. The unsuccessful use of tanks during the assault on Grozny in 1994, among other things, proved that Russia needed to develop a new armoured vehicle.

When the Medved' was being built, its developers focused on how to protect it from mines. The special shape of the bottom, high ground clearance and additional armour help the vehicle withstand explosions even from the most powerful mines.

During tests at the Defence Ministry firing range a bomb with seven kilograms (15 lbs) of TNT was exploded under the vehicle's wheels. The Medved’s structure withstood the explosion and would have even guaranteed the crew's survival, if they had been inside.

But that is not all. The Medved' is equipped with special instruments that can incapacitate radio-controlled explosive devices, as well as with a smoke-screen system. This makes the armoured carrier a type of module that can protect all nearby vehicles.

    Prospects for use
However, the Medved’s armour, with all its merits, is still not durable enough to participate in full-fledged combat. Protection from a mine or armour-piercing bullets does not guarantee protection from a grenade launcher. Additional armour-plating is necessary to overcome this defect. The Arzamassky Machine Construction Factory, which manufactures the Medved', is currently working on this challenge.

While these weaknesses have the potential to prevent the use of Medved’ on the battlefield, they will not impede the use of the vehicle in other spheres. According to the Russian daily Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Russia's Interior Ministry and the recently formed National Guard are showing particular interest in the armoured vehicle.

Anti-terrorist operations may one day require precisely the technical characteristics of the Medved’. Additionally, export opportunities are also opening up. During the Army 2016 Exhibition, defence ministry delegations from various countries, including Argentina and Niger, have showed an interest in the new Russian “bear”.

Ka-52, Ka-60 and Other Helicopters Contesting Superiority in Russian Navy

In the framework of its teeming rearmament program, Russia is set to supply its expanding Navy with advanced helicopters. Let's find out what choppers are shouldering their way to the deck.

Reviving the power of its armed forces, Russia is actively beefing up its Navy. The number of its vessels has surpassed 100, and over 50 warships will have been reinforced it by 2018. Modern navies actively use helicopters for reconnaissance, assault and other missions, and Russia is no black sheep in this picture.

Currently Russian vessels use the Ka-27 Helix choppers which have been in service since the 1980s. In general, the trusty beast Helix is still unequalled if the combination of its characteristics is considered, but times are changing, and Moscow seeks a new chopper to meet the requests of its awakening maritime power.

At the moment, Russia has 3+1 options to accomplish this task.

    Alligator, Helix and Killer Whale

The primary candidate to sail aboard Russian ships is the Ka-52K, the navalized derivative of the Ka-52 scout and attack helicopter with foldable rotor blades.

The Ka-52 has a distinctive coaxial rotor system which enables top-class maneuvering and aerobatics beyond the capabilities of other helicopters. It bears a 30mm automatic cannon, and can carry laser-guided anti-tank missiles, short-range air-to-air missiles and other missiles or bombs. It has proved itself while attacking terrorist targets in Syria.

This helicopter can be further upgraded to fit naval needs.

"The Ka-52 can be equipped with formidable anti-ship weapons, such as the Kh-35 cruise missile and the Kh-31AD [the world's first supersonic anti-ship missile]. With these missiles, an attack helicopter can be turned into an anti-ship chopper," military expert Alexei Leonkov told TV channel Zvezda.

Moreover, the Ka-52K gunship can carry MPT-1 Kolibri (Hummingbird) torpedoes loaded with 45kg of explosives, which will enable the aircraft to scupper submarines.

The second available option is the Ka-31 helicopter which is a deeply modernized version of the tried-and-true Ka-27.

Tested in the 1970s and in service since the 1980s, the Ka-27 is capable of detecting underwater and surface targets, disclosing their whereabouts to ship and shore points or attacking them with airborne weapons.

The third variant stipulates stepping away from the family of helicopters with coaxially mounted contra-rotating rotors. The Ka-60 Kasatka (Killer Whale), whose military modification's first flight is slated for summer, is designed for cargo transportation to combat areas, search and rescue operations, as well as for landing missions and patrol activities. Its younger brother, the multipurpose Ka-62, has recently made its maiden flight and is primarily designed for cargo transportation, medevac and search and rescue operations.

So basically, if emphasis is put on combat, the Ka-52K is the best choice. If reconnaissance and transportation are important, the Ka-60/62 can be preferred.

Finally, while the three options are at hand, Russia may develop a brand new machine which will embrace the functionalities of all the vehicles listed above and become a universal reconnaissance, assault, search & rescue helicopter.

    Unexpected Moves

Earlier this week, Russian Helicopters deputy CEO announced the manufacturer will test-fly its new combat aircraft, whose velocity of over 450kmph will exceed the speeds of operational choppers by over 50 percent, in June. Could it fit the Navy?

The selection of helicopters largely depends on carriers. Moscow could dust off the 11780 assault ship project which envisages 12 Ka-60s or 25 Ka-52Ks, or a mixed scheme involving all three models of helicopters (adding Ka-31s). Such support would be sufficient for 1,000 marines. On the other hand, Russia was reportedly working on its own Mistral-like helicopter carrier after the deal with Paris was scrapped. To sum it all up, Russia has several options to choose from, and their realization will crucially depend on the goals set before the Navy.

Nov 9 Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday Russia was ready to fully restore relations with the United States following the election of businessman Donald Trump as the new U.S. president.

Receiving credentials from new foreign ambassadors to Russia, Putin said he had heard Trump's campaign statements about improving ties with Moscow. He said Russia was ready do its part to achieve this but recognised it would not be easy.

Improved relations would benefit both Russia and the United States, he added. (Reporting by Polina Devitt and Christian Lowe; Writing by Jack Stubbs; Editing by Alexander Winning)

The next-generation S-500 Prometey surface-to-air missile system, also known as the 55R6M Triumfator-M, will allow Russia to protect large areas from the most lethal offensive weapons, including hypersonic weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles, defense analyst Victor Murakhovsky told Radio Sputnik.

Murakhovsky described the S-500 as an advanced, unified, multi-purpose, integrated anti-aircraft and anti-ballistic missile defense system, which is meant to replace the S-300 and complement the S-400 complex. "This is the next step. These are air defense capabilities on operational and strategic levels," he said. The S-500 "allows us to protect entire regions from intercontinental ballistic missiles and other advanced weapons, including hypersonic glide vehicles currently under development in the United States."

    Read more: https://sputniknews.com/military/201611121047367251-s500-ballistic-missile-defense/

The analyst added that the S-500 will also be capable of hitting targets in near space, including satellites outfitted with electro-optical surveillance systems.

Murakhovsky further said that the S-500 has canceled out multi-billion dollar advanced weapons programs which the United States has pursued. The S-500 has "displeased" the Pentagon since the US Department of Defense "has spent so much on creating the so-called Prompt Global Strike (PGS) initiative, as well as hypersonic glide vehicles and cruise missiles," the analyst said. "All of this has gone down the drain. We are talking about hundreds of billions of dollars!" In addition, Russia's newest air defense system "has made Americans nervous taking into account that the S-500 is a purely defensive system and the fact that the United States unilaterally withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty," he observed.

Washington decided to withdraw from the ABM treaty in 2001, rendering one of the key international arms agreements void.

The S-500, designed by Almaz Antey, is said to have a range of 600 kilometers (more than 370 miles). The system can simultaneously intercept up to ten ballistic and hypersonic missiles traveling at a speed of 7 kilometers per second. The Prometey is capable of engaging targets at an altitude of up to 200 kilometers (more than 120 miles). The system is capable of intercepting aircraft and UAVs, as well as destroying low-earth-orbit satellites, space destruction devices and orbital weaponry.

More than size the ground pressure matters.
