Russians to take more time to deliver Gorshkov

St Petersburg: Amid the buzz at Russia's most happening naval show - the maritime exhibition at St Petersburg - word is that the Gorshkov aircraft carrier could be further delayed. There's no official confirmation of that neither from the Sevmash shipyard nor the Russian Defence Ministry.

But naval sources told CNN-IBN there appeared to be problems with the supply of certain steels to the yard. The sources said this was an internal problem in Russia involving different ministries. But unless resolved speedily this could see the carrier's delivery put off to 2013.

A high level Indian defence delegation was recently at the Sevmash yard to take stock of the situation. It's not clear what new measures are being recommended to expedite delivery of the Gorshkov. What's clear is that the Indian Navy may have to wait some more time for the Gorshkov.

Problems also with the delivery of the second line of Talwar Class frigates - three of which are being built at the Yantar shipyard.
The first was to be handed over in November this year to the Indian Navy. But is now expected to be delivered only next February. Reason for the delay - because the Yantar yard is building warships after a long break. The chief of the shipyard was replaced.

The new chief - only 48 hours into his job - refused to comment but there was an oblique hint from elsewhere.

Deputy General Director at Rosoboronexport Viktor Komardin said, "We see different obstacles and hurdles on the way. Bureaucracy, then crisis of different kinds which raises the normal steps makes it twice more expensive. It is economy, it is bureaucracy. It is caution you understand because each project is the leading one."

The delay could see the cost of the Talwar go up. Adding to the acrimony between the two capitals and undermining a crucial pillar of the India-Russia partnership.

i wonder if suresh kalmadi was consultant of Sevmash shipyard.

thats the commonality between CWG committe and Sevmash shipyard. both make lot of promises but projects usually end up in delays.

    Steel supply problems? Still?

In the last 5 years, India, owing to a steel supply problem from Russia, has managed to set up a manufacturing plant for AB/A grade steel, complete about 30% of IAC1, and even begin plans for IAC2. And Gorshkov still isn't ready, because of steel supply problems???

Russian are habitual for doing late supply and for gorshkov case that is limit and if free air craft carrier cost more then new then think what happen if we go for new Russian ac .

    Bad news,

Yesterday there was news about sale of fighter jet engines to China and today this delay

I hope Russian Govt will step in and do the necessity. Other-wise, it is Bad for both countries relations.

I think , India should reduce its defence deals with russia. There are always delays and it also looks that they want to cheat us in quality of goods.I cannot digest the crash of mig 29 and whatever happened with nerpa . I hope I be wrong , but with such delays and lack of AB grade steel , If they try to comprise with quality.
In the case of Mig 35 , they gave so much of features on paper . And I do not get any news of the project development , so was it only for India???

2020 is its date for entering service...till that operate INS VIRAAT as it is refitted to operate till 2020...& any how Vikrant class will be commissioned till 2014... we can wait for 2 more years... Better than wasting the money on Gorshkov...& Begging to Russia fpr its completion ...

There's no official word on whether or not the British government intends to sell the HMS Prince of Wales. They've suggested that they might actually just keep it as a training vessel, rotating it out into service every now and then while the HMS Queen Elizabeth undergoes maintenance or w/e.

Also, neither have been built yet. No point in holding your breath to find out if HMS PoW actually ever floats or if the left gets its way and PoW is shelved.
