New Delhi: The Congress has recommended cricketer Sachin Tendulkar's name for the Rajya Sabha and is now waiting for him to respond to the same, according to sources. However, an official announcement is awaited. If Tendulkar accepts the nomination, he would be the first active sportsman and cricketer to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha.

Sources say the Home Ministry has recommended four names including those of Tendulkar and Bollywood actress Rekha for the Rajya Sabha. There is no word from the government on other two names. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had written a letter to the Home Ministry on the issue.

Sources say that the Congress has offered to nominate Tendulkar under the President's quota. The 39-year-old master blaster who has brought many a laurel to the country through his exploits in the game, and Rekha, known for her brilliant and emotional portrayals in Hindi cinema in the 80s, will become members of Parliament under a provision of the Constitution that allows the President to nominate 12 members to the Upper House.

Article 80 of the Constitution provides for nomination of persons having special knowledge or practical experience in matters such as literature, science, art and social service.

Rekha, 57, was one of the top heroines of the 80s in Hindi films and and had won several national awards in her acting career.

Tendulkar's nomination to Rajya Sabha has come as a surprise against the backdrop of a long-standing demand for conferring of Bharat Ratna on him for his contribution to the game. He completed the historic achievement of scoring 100 international centuries in March this year.

Tendulkar along with his wife Anjali met Congress President Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath residence in New Delhi.

Although officially the Congress said that Sonia wanted to meet Tendulkar and personally congratulate him on achieving the historic achievement of scoring 100 international centuries, but sources say the main agenda was his nomination for the Rajya Sabha.

Reacting to the reports of Sachin Tendulkar's proposed nomination, BJP leader Najma Heptulla said, "We are very happy that Tendulkar's name has been proposed for the Rajya Sabha."

"Tendulkar is a great player, we are proud of him. If he is being nominated, surely he would devote some time to Parliament," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

However, the proposal didn't go well with people from the cricket fraternity. Cricket analyst Harsha Bhogle said, "I don't think it is the greatest idea. He doesn't have the experience of governing or doing social work. People are trying to gain mileage out of Tendulkar."

Anyone that excels in a space that occupies significant section in public life is good. I'd rather see Sachin the head of IOA/ Sports Ministry than Kalmadi.

Tendulkar's nomination Congress' dirtiest trick: Thackeray

Mumbai, April 29 (IANS) Reiterating that cricketer Sachin Tendulkar's nomination to Rajya Sabha was the Congress' "dirtiest play", Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray Sunday said the party has an ulterior motive in the move.

"It is Congress's dirtiest play, the real Dirty Picture," he said, speaking to reporters after he was conferred a lifetime achievement award by Raipur-based magazine Cartoon Watch at a function here.

Thackeray had, in his party mouthpiece Saamna, Saturday said that Tendulkar's fans would have loved to call him Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar rather than only Sachin Tendulkar, the MP. He also alleged that Congress is trying to divert media's attention by doing so.

He, however, said he was proud of Tendulkar and his achievements and contribution in the field of cricket.

Thackeray, who was in good spirits after the award function, spoke on and joked about various subjects. He also said that his cartoons took a back seat as he was busy with bring the party (Shiv Sena) to the fore.

In a total out of blue topic, Thackeray also said that he has stopped smoking cigars. "I have stopped smoking cigars. Now, I only drink wine," he said.

Thackeray also took pot shots at social activist Anna Hazare and said that he should first take care of those who are corrupt within his team and then talk about eradicating corruption from the country.

Asked about who he thinks would be a suitable President of India next, he said he has not thought about it yet.

"Don't you find one suitable person for the post of president? After every five years this whole thing starts," he said.

He also hit out at union Agriculture Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar's recent statement that the next president must be a person without political leanings.

"Don't tell me about Pawar, he is an unreliable man," he said sarcastically.

sir Im totally agreed with your signature. and here we have a news as below:

here we may say that Congress has got the right person to put for the position of Indian PM for the nest election. we know that Sachin is a Champion sportsman and he may exceed performance of Rajiv Gandhi, who was also just a pilot by profession and then he suddenly became Indian PM. but we know that Rajiv performed excellent as an Indian PM and he was also the man who brought computer in India as he had the true intention to see his nation on the top. and here we may say, Sachin is set to exceed performance of Rajiv Gandhi, if he may be put on the position of Indian PM by Congress. :meeting:

Congress is now waiting for its removal from Indian politics but now they have got Sachin Tendulkar who may save this historical party, if he is put for the post of PM from Congress for next election. I think Congress won't miss this chance to put Sachin on the position of next Indian PM which may help Congress workers survive for longer :victory:
