New Delhi: Safran Aircraft Engine (erstwhile Snecma) is in advanced talks with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for co-development of a combat engine.

Speaking to select media on May 16, after a long discussion at DRDO, chief executive officer (CEO) Safran Aircraft Engine, Olivier Andries said that Safran has proposed development of a new combat engine to the DRDO.

As DRDO is reluctant to let go of its baby, the Kaveri engine, which remains grounded even after two decades, Andries said that Safran is open to the idea of capitalising on the development of Kaveri. In the same breath he added that, “Another starting point for development could be the M-88 engine which powers Rafale fighter aircraft.” Clearly, from Safran perspective, this would be the preferred option instead of getting into Kaveri.

“We are willing to help India develop complete autonomy in combat engines,” Andries told the media using the example of Vikas and Shakti engines, both of which are a result of Safran’s partnership and transfer of technology with ISRO and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. Saying that the talks with the DRDO are in an advanced stage, Andries added that, “Once the programme takes off, we will look for a manufacturing partner. It could be a public or a private sector company.”

SHAKTI engines are produced under license by HAL. They are just assembled in India. For combat aircraft we don't need license we need our own engine. It would be similar to sukhoi mki assembling being done.

Seems like Kaveri is dead again.

If Neo MMRCA cannot get the success for Kaveri, what will?

If they are currently only consulting on fixing Kaveri K9, it's just getting us the know how we lacked, but no engine for operational use, since the thrust was just aimed at 81kN.
If they now offer the K10 again, Kaveri + M88 core, it can be enough for LCA MK1A, although I wouldn't like to have an unproven engine on a single engine LCA (see the problems the A400 currently has with an unproven engine).

The question however is, what is the 1 billion for, which they suppose to invest into Kaveri research. That can't be just for fixing K9 right?

There are different thrust variants within Kaveri itself. There's the K9, K9+, K10... the ones that we know of. There's also Project Ghatak.

If France is going to play games about developing Kaveri, they can forget about more orders for Rafale. This deal is being watched by opposition very closely and if France is going to provide ammo to them by cheating BJP & NaMo. They better watch out.

But now the condition is not like in the past around MMRCA. They had orders now. Wondering what was the role and the impact of the MMRCA winner in the IAF's elaborate technical evaluation lasted for so many years competition defeating EF 2000, F18, F16 and Gripen.
