Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and UAE cut diplomatic ties with Qatar

DUBAI: Four Arab nations cut diplomatic ties with Qatar early Monday morning, furtherSaudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates all announced they would withdraw their diplomatic staff from Qatar , a gas-rich nation that will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Saudi Arabia said Qatari troops would be pulled from its ongoing war in Yemen.

All the nations also said they planned to cut air and sea traffic to the peninsular country. It wasn't immediately clear how that would affect Qatar Airways, one of the region's major long-haul carriers.

The decision comes after Qatar alleged in late May that hackers took over the site of its state-run news agency and published what it called fake comments from its ruling emir about Iran and Israel. Its Gulf Arab neighbors responded with anger, blocking Qatari-based media, including the Doha-based satellite news network Al-Jazeera.

The official Saudi state news agency said Saudi Arabia had decided to sever diplomatic and consular relations with Qatar "proceeding from the exercise of its sovereign right guaranteed by international law and the protection of national security from the dangers of terrorism and extremism".

Saudi Arabia cut all land air and sea contacts with Qatar "and urges all brotherly countries and companies to do the same."

Bahrain's foreign affairs ministry issued a statement early Monday saying it would withdraw its diplomatic mission from the Qatari capital of Doha within 48 hours and that all Qatari diplomats should leave Bahrain within the same period.

The ministry's statement said Qatari citizens needed to leave Bahrain within two weeks and that air and sea traffic between the two countries would be halted. It wasn't immediately clear how that would affect Qatar Airways, one of the region's major long-haul carriers.

Bahrain blamed Qatar's "media incitement, support for armed terrorist activities and funding linked to Iranian groups to carry out sabotage and spreading chaos in Bahrain" for its decision.

The United Arab Emirates cut ties with Qatar, state news agency WAM reported, accusing its Gulf Arab neighbour of supporting extremism and undermining regional stability.

The Emirates cut ties and gave diplomats 48 hours to leave the country, citing their "support, funding and embrace of terrorist, extremist and sectarian organisations", WAM said.

Egypt said on Monday it cut ties with Qatar, accusing the Gulf Arab state of supporting "terrorist" organisations including the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's state news agency reported.

As Churkin said in 2012 to Qatar's diplomat in UN:
"si vous me parlerez une autre fois de cette facon, il n'y aura plus une telle chose comme le Qatar a partir d'aujourd'hui..."

On a serioous view, Crisis was raising since the 90ies. Qatar was the first of small arabic gulf to bypass KSA for contacts with foreign (western countries). They are close to muslim brotherhood, while KSA are wahhabites, close to salafism. Furthermore, Qtar is the most iran tolerant of arabic cou ntries. And KSA (neither Israel btw) do not want Iran back in the game (and bought Trump agreement for that).

Nothing incorrect in that. We have a ticklish situation. We are friends with all sides, be it KSA, Iran or Qatar now.

And being a non-Muslim country, no one is bothered as this is about the 'leadership' of 'Muslim nations', something that Turkey under Erdogan is trying to position itself as, but not being taken seriously as is a secularistic and pluralistic society (and we see him trying to undermine that).

Of course our Western Neighbour has had this ambition since 70s.

Let me really throw a wild one here - we see 'possible action' against Terror havens by US?

If so, the move sits well with KSA distancing itself from Qatar.

I am actually tickled thinking about Pakistani position right now!!!

Pakistan is a true blue "dhobi ka kutta" right now. Nawaz Sharif was demoted to a darban when he visited to participate in evil Islamic palantíri touching session.

Analysis: Why is Turkey deploying troops to Qatar?
Turkey's decision is not necessarily anti-Saudi, but it is definitely pro-Qatari, say analysts.

Only two days after Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain severed diplomatic relations with Qatar for its alleged support of "terrorist organisations", Turkey's parliament has ratified military deals allowing its troops to be deployed to a Turkish military base in Qatar. Turkish analysts talking to Al Jazeera interpreted the move as "an apparent show of support for Qatar".
