    Re: Project-17 Shivalik-class FFG

The range of Shivalik's and Talwar's SAMs will remain the same at ~30km unless the VLS-launched 9M317ME is retrofitted.

The P15 Delhi DDG carries a total of 80 surface-to-air missiles (48 x Shtil-1 and 32 x Barak-1), the version of 9M317 on P15 has a range close to 40km. The VLS-launched 9M317ME is being proposed to replace this system in the planned SLEP upgrade of P15 DDGs, which will also see the implementation of the PJ-10 BrahMos in place of the Kh-35E "Switchblade" ASCM. I believe the version of 9M317ME to go onboard P15 SLEP could have a ~50km range.

All P-17A frigates and P-15A, P-15B DDGs will come ready-made with different versions of Barak-VIII, but there are no plans to retrofit any existing warships with Barak-VIII, atleast as of now.

India receives second Russia-built stealth missile frigate

The second of three stealth frigates that Russia builds for India at the Yantar Shipyard in Russia’s Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad arrived at the port of Mumbai, an Indian Defense Ministry source said on Sunday.

The source did not specify whether an official ceremony of the frigate’s reception would be held.

Russia and India signed a $1.6 billion contract on construction of three modified Krivak III class (also known as Talwar class) guided missile frigates for India in 2006. The first frigate, INS Teg, joined the Indian Navy on April 27.

The second frigate, The Tarkash, was commissioned on November 9 and sailed from Baltiysk to India on November 17.

The last in the series of three frigates, The Trikand, currently undergoes dock trials and after it completes sea trials in the Baltic Sea will join the Indian Navy in the summer of 2013.

The new frigates are each armed with eight BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.

They are also equipped with a 100-mm gun, a Shtil surface-to-air missile system, two Kashtan air-defense gun/missile systems, two twin 533-mm torpedo launchers, and an anti submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter.

Russia previously built three Talwar class frigates for India - INS Talwar (Sword), INS Trishul (Trident), and INS Tabar (Axe).

wonder why India never bought a much needed ATBM system like S-300 till now when it should have been purchased long back ago

Israel, South Korea (even Japan), Taiwan, and India face the most short to medium range ballistic missiles aimed at them and all but India got Patriot systems long ago but our country gladly allocated money for 5-800 million dollar unit cost ships way back from 1996 but not for S-300 which costs just 150-200 million dollars per system.

and that our own ATBM is only now ready for testing in 2013-14 and subsequent deployment from 2015 while we neglected missile defense till now endangering country in the most spectacular way from at least 1999-2014.

As usual, our country's technocrats were sleeping and not willing to work more than 2 hours everyday.

    Re: Project-17 Shivalik-class FFG

I thank my lucky stars I said "atleast as of now" back then.

It seems now IN wants to fit the P-15 Delhi-class DDGs with Barak-II (or VIII, however you may call it)
as well as MF-STAR AESA radars in the planned SLEP upgrade.

This will keep P-15 an extremely relevant destroyer for many more years.

There is no problem, just some petty delays as usual. Things will be sorted out in due course.
