New Delhi: CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat had decided to teach Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi a lesson for the 'insult' meted out to him on the nuclear deal issue by withdrawing support to the government in 2008. With their larger-than-life image and influence on governance with 62 MPs, Karat, CPI's AB Bardhan and other Left leaders were of the belief that their decision would be the last word for the government, says former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.
These are his views on the bitter period in his last days of his Parliamentary career contained in his autobiography "Keeping the Faith: Memoirs of a Parliamentarian", which was released by Prime Minister Singh on Saturday.

"After the formation of the UPA government with Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi as the chairperson, it gradually became clear to all, especially those in the government, that the Left parties -- which had 62 members in the Lok Sabha and on whose outside support the survival of the government depended -- wanted to play the role of the 'real power behind the throne' as it were," Chatterjee says.

"The party gave the unpalatable impression that the UPA government could survive only with the blessings of the party's leaders, primarily of its general secretary, Prakash Karat. Needless to say, the common man took this to be nothing but unjustified arrogance on their part," he says.

And in the end got himself being taught a lesson by the Congress.

One thing I applaud the Congress was for the Spine it showed during the Nuke deal and I didn like the BJP for opposing it when they could have supported the Govt and also taken a share of credit for initiating it in the first place during their rule.

When all commies are waxing eloquent on the 'great stand' that Indian communists like karat are taking against 'capitalism', may the said gentlemen reflect upon the fact that brinda karat is related to Pranoy Roy and that the venerable EMS Namboodripad happens to be from one of the richest families in kerala. 'Communism' is an easy pass time for the rich who want to be seen unleashing revolutions but the real brunt of their kooky theories is borne by the average man. Look at the MILLIONS of jobs that deregulation of banks, insurance and telephones brought...MILLIONS...all of which would have been thin air if the commies had their way. You had your chance. You didn't deliver. Now leave the land and let us live in peace.

actually not,if we r talking about corruption and image,u definitely have to give thumps up to the CPM,not only Karat and EMS but also to people like Somnath,Brinda karat,Sitaram Yechury and Biman bose,u cant find controversies surrounding this people if it is about money

i highly praise EMS,as he is the first communist leader in the world to b elected democratically

The only reason i oppose them is due to some of the party's current ideology, specially opposing the nuke bill and teaming up with mayawati(that was least expected from them)

In my view their policy is a bit out dated ,they lost all the respect I had for them and their system of intra- party democracy when they kicked somnath out of the party

Exactly the Communists are stuck in a time-warp and are refusing to acknowledge that Communism has been defeated both economically and politically everywere except in some isolated pickets of Cuba nd NK and believe blindly in the concepts of anti-Americanism,anti-imperialism,etc etc.

They should come out of this shell else face extinction.

May I know who you are referring to.?

They should come out of this
