Another flawed IDRW article. First of all the Russians would never allowed us to use a western engine. Secondly, a large part of the upgrade is about replacing Russian stuff with indigenous, that we can upgrade and repair on our own. Indigenous cockpit displays (that even Russia buys from us now) are already in the MKI and we will integrate new once. Large parts of the EW is meant to be indigenous, Astra is meant to replace R77 missiles and we soon might use indigenous bombs too. Not to mention that we develop, test and integrate Brahmos in India too.

So all this makes us self reliant, while still getting the best of Russia and western counries if we want.
A Su 30 with as much Indian parts as possible, just as a Mig 29K with as much Indian parts as possible, will protect the country and not LCA/NLCA.

Induction Ceremony of SU 30 MKI to the Valiants

In a solemn ceremony on 24 Apr 17, the Su30 MKI aircraft was inducted into 221 Squadron, ‘Valiants’, of the IAF. Air Marshal C Hari Kumar AVSM VM VSM ADC, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Air Command IAF was the chief guest for the occasion. Among the distinguished guests were Mr Daljeet Singh, CEO, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and other officials from HAL.
The ‘Valiants’ which flew Mig-23 aircraft till 2009, is now equipped with the formidable Su30 MKI aircraft. The Su 30 MKI is a state of the art all weather multi role fighter aircraft capable of undertaking varied air combat and ground attack missions.
The ’Valiants’ were formed as an offensive fighter squadron on 14 Feb 1963 at Barrackpore with Sqn Ldr N Chatrath as the first Commanding Officer. The Squadron was than equipped with three types of aircraft namely the Vampires, Spitfire, Hurricane and Su-7 aircraft. The squadron has changed many bases during its fifty four years long journey and has taken part in 1971 War and Kargil operations. Su-7 aircraft of the Valiants roared over East Pakistan in support of the Indian Army’s blitzkrieg advance in 1971. The ‘Valiants’, operating the MiG-23s, were the first ones to fire weapons on the enemy during the Kargil war. Many of the squadron pilots have been decorated with gallantry awards over the years.
Personnel from the Air Force Station and their families witnessed a well organised ceremony on this occasion. Air Cmde DV Khot VM, Air Officer Commanding of the Air Force Station and his team have worked hard for the smooth induction of the new Su-30 Squadron. The induction of the Squadron will boost the offensive capabilities of the Indian Air Force in this sector. The Flight Commander of the Squadron performed an impressive Low Level Aerobatic Display.
Air Marshal C Hari Kumar formally handed over the official documents of the Squadron to Wing Commander HS Luthra, the Commanding Officer of the Squadron. In his address, the Air Marshal congratulated the air warriors of the Squadron on the timely induction of the mighty Su 30 MKI. He appreciated the tireless efforts put in by all the personnel of the base. The Air Marshal and his wife Mrs Devika Hari Kumar interacted with the squadron personnel during the tea after the ceremony.

India has about 230 operational fighters although just half is available for operational flights at any given point of time.

New Delhi: In a startling saga of compromises made on the safety and capability of India's frontline fighter aircraft besides posing danger to the life of pilots, it has come to light that at least 18 of brand new Sukhoi 30 MKI had been fitted with already-used and secondhand engines.

"It was noticed while checking the records…that AL 31FP engines fitted in certain aircraft was in Cat B condition at the time of inspection / delivery to Indian Air Force (IAF)," said a report encapsulating the findings that have been accessed by this newspaper. While this fitment of Cat 2 (category B) or secondhand engines into brand new Sukhoi 30 MKIs was done at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's (HAL) facility at Nashik "without the knowledge and approval of the defence ministry", what is surprising is the acceptance of such aircraft by the IAF. "Certain aircraft with one new and one old engine were wrongly accepted by IAF and the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance. As these arrangements were not in tune with contractual provisions, it should have been rejected by IAF and DGAQA…. In any case, IAF should have obtained approval from MoD for accepting aircraft with one second hand engine.”

Sukhoi 30 MKI has two AL 31FP engines

    • 18 Su 30 MKIs fitted with old engines
    • Poses reliability and safety risk
    • Fitment violates contractual conditions
    • India has about 230 operational fighters although just half is available for operational flights at any given point of time
    • 7 Sukhoi 30 MKIs have crashed to date, causing a loss of about Rs 2,350 crore

Cock pit of Su 30 looks like they have progressed from dials and meters to projecting dials and meters on a computer screen, but no where close to the interactive displays of US cockpits.

Can you please post fotos of F-15 or f-18 from the production batch of 1998-2002, because su30mki standard was freezed at that time. I am sure it won't be better than this.

You can't compare things from that era to current ones. It's like comparing tube TV to LED TV. And for your kind information su30mki will kick the ASS of f-35 in any air combat, it won't be able to out manoeuvre it and its radar is huge so there is huge possibility of it seeing f-35 first and taking first shot at it. Remember lollipop are good to look at but War is won by sword no matter if its rusty or bent.
