New Delhi: Subramanian Swamy's Janata Party has merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2014 general elections.

The announcement was made by Mr Swamy and BJP president Rajnath Singh after they met at the latter's residence in Delhi today. Former BJP chief Nitin Gadkari and senior party leader Arun Jaitley were also present at the meet.

"Dr Subramanian Swamy is national president of Janata Party and he has decided that the Janata Party and BJP should merge. Today, I accept the merger of Janata Party with BJP. I am confident that with Swamy's joining the BJP and the merger of his party will benefit the BJP...I welcome Dr Swamy in BJP," said Mr Singh.

As Rajnathji correctly said, the country is passing through a difficult time... for unity, for nationalistic purpose, the party is needed by the country today because of all the problems that we are having," said Mr Swamy.

Mr Swamy has served as member of the Planning Commission and a former Cabinet Minister at the Centre and has been a five-time MP.

He is an ardent proponent of Hindutva philosophy outside the Sangh Parivar and has been active in exposing the 2G Spectrum scam. He recently also questioned the Rs. 2,000 crore Jet-Etihad deal.

He is good lawyer & importantly he is one who has taken on the government on various corruption issues. But I do not think, due to him, BJP would gain some seats in TN from where janta party actually belongs.

Yes Tunguska'ji, He is very much national figure who can take on the UPA anytime anywhere. Great addition. UPA's National image has to be beaten down to beat them in the election.

Let see in coming days. Right now UPA is not much bother about these corruption scandals and instead they want to open up the secularism debate to polarise the voter. In such a situation, Dr.Swami has to work very for hard as he is naturally a more hardcore hindutva leader than anybody else in BJP.

I guess we have our future home or foreign minister or Law minister :)

I think all of us have to work hard to make it happen, even by being first to vote

it is important that everyone contributes unidirectionally and together for disposal of congress and its FAMILY
it is the so called Families that ruin the nation using dynastic politics

Gandhis for India, abdullas for kashmir. do the father and son ever make sense what they talk?
Someone questioned the censorship in Kashmir and that SOB Abdulla senior talks of Godhra 2002, seems they just cannot get over it.
If they cannot get over the past, how can they give us a better future.
