Syrian army, allies in southeast Syria reach Iraqi border: pro-Assad commander
    Fri Jun 9, 2017 | 1:35pm EDT

Syrian troops and allied militia in the southeast Syrian desert reached the Iraqi border on Friday, near the Tanf base where U.S. special forces train local rebels to fight Islamic State, a pro-government commander said.

The advance follows an escalation of tensions between the United States and the Syrian government with its backers over control of the southeastern frontier with Iraq.

"The first units of the army and its allies arrived to the Syrian-Iraqi border northeast of al-Tanf," said the non-Syrian commander in a military alliance fighting in support of President Bashar al-Assad.

The area is seen as crucial to Assad's Iranian allies and could open an overland supply route from Tehran to Iraq, Syria and Lebanon - a major concern to U.S. allies in the region.

A range of Iranian-backed militias from the region, including the Lebanese Hezbollah group, have supported the Syrian government in the six-year war against rebel groups.

The Tanf base lies in the Syrian Badia, a vast sparsely populated desert territory that stretches to the Jordanian and Iraqi borders. Damascus has declared the Badia region a military priority.

Months of advances by U.S.-backed rebels against Islamic State have allowed them to secure swathes of territory in the Badia, alarming the Syrian government and its allies.

The Americans had blocked them through rebel groups in the area, the commander said, so the Syrian army and allied forces opened a new route and pressed on to the border.

"It's a message to everyone," he said without elaborating.

The pro-Assad alliance had threatened this week to hit U.S. positions in Syria, warning that "self-restraint" over American air strikes would end if Washington crossed "red lines".

The U.S. launched air strikes on Tuesday against pro-government forces that it said posed a threat to American forces and the Syrian rebel groups they support in the area, the second such strike in recent weeks.

Hezbollah's al-Manar television channel said on Friday the army and its allies had "expanded their area of control" in the Badia.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitoring group, said dozens of soldiers and pro-government forces had arrived at the border.

They reached a point nearly 50 km north of al-Tanf, after going through the desert around the area held by U.S.-backed rebels, it said.

Good luck to them. F/A-18Fs were recently spotted flying over Syria and Iraq with this payload.

    That's 10 GBU-32 JDAMs, 453.5kg each, and 2 AIM-9X.

It's not quite the loadout of the A-6 which would fly with 24 226.7kg MK82, but it's the closest to a "f*ck you and everything else in the vicinity" as you'll find flying in Syria today.

The US has shown no reluctance to strike the Syrian Armed Forces or their allies or proxies. Any faux or realized red line will be crossed purposefully and any response met with overwhelmingly.

Doubt it, China has trouble accepting its "aukaat," they think they're already the biggest superpower of the world and they're going around fighting with everyone and bullying all their neighbors.

A coalition of their neighbors, led by the US, is bound to pull the rug out from right under them at the worst possible time in the near future. China had everything necessary to be a future superpower, but they are their own worst enemies, they are too arrogant and overconfident.

Neither had RuAF hesitated to attack US backed forces. Turkey may be the proxy for Russia in Raqqa.

And at the end of the day, it is about who can offer greater number of human sacrifices. Neither USAF/USN nor RuAF will intervene against the other :D

And we all know who has unlimited supply of men and is willing to sacrifice them :)

US moves rocket launcher into Syria for the first time

The U.S has moved its High Mobility Artillery Rocket System into southern Syria for the first time, according to a CNN report.

HIMARS is a truck-mounted rocket-launcher system capable of firing missiles to distances of up to 185 miles. Its movement to the Tanf area brings significant military power to an area recently in the spotlight due to several coalition strikes against pro-Syrian regime forces and the downing of a pro-regime drone by the United States on June 8.

This is the first time the U.S. has moved HIMARS into Syria, but not the first time it has used it in Syria. The U.S. is likely using the system in the country because of its long-range capability.

According to CNN, it was deployed via Turkey, across the border into northern Syria, to help the Syrian Democratic Forces battle the Islamic State group. HIMARS has also been used from Jordan and in Iraq to attack ISIS within the country.

One defense official said HIMARS was moved into Syria in response to pro-regime aggressions, while another said it was uncertain.

Regardless, U.S. defense officials maintain their actions against pro-regime forces is purely motivated by the need for self-defense.

"Those are self-defense strikes, and the commander on the ground has the authority to take whatever action necessary, and I support that," U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday.

The civil war and resulting lack of resources is making it impossible for farmers and officials in Idlib province to control this year's locust swarm. Image by Hugo Goodridge/Al-Monitor

'Day of the locusts' in Syria's Idlib
IDLIB, Syria — With harvest season in full swing, farmers and officials have begun to calculate the damage done by a swarm of locusts that descended in April and May on large areas of opposition-controlled Idlib province, in northern Syria. From early May to late June, farmers usually harvest wheat, barley, lentils, chickpeas and cumin, among other crops, in addition to several types of vegetables on the province's plains and plateaus. Agriculture is the most vital economic activity in Idlib. Before the Syrian revolution, Idlib was a top olive oil producer, second only to Aleppo in the country.
