Why doesn't army dispose of these 40+ year old second generation T72M/M1 tanks. At least use them as target practice for Arjun MBT or Let drdo develop another Tank-ex version.

    T-72 only need an upgrade.

Indian Army need 65 Armoured regiments. We can't deploy all regiments as Arjun.

That going to be cost prohibitive.

On field? Doubt it. Have not witnessed poor availability when operationally mobilised.

So let me get this straight. The tank was out on a trial run at Heavy Vehicles Factory .........

    and for that:

".........but they have given more trouble to the personnel out on the field and during training exercises on many occasions."

Call me a paranoid, but I smell the whole consignment of rotten fish here. HVF is tasked to make the tank. Somebody screwed up the checks, and the equipment is being generalised and blamed!!

And what is the track record of any tank in the world? Are there zero breakdowns? And few minor accidents result in this:

"The track record is such that a few army officers have objected to using the tanks because of minor accidents that has led to injuries to the crew," said a DRDO official who did not want to reveal his identity.

LOL!!! Who is the joker who is writing this piece of crap?

    The T-72 tanks
made under transfer of technology from Russia may be the mainstay of armoured division of the Army

The first line of the article is the answer unto itself!

As for shell .... old rant of mine - look at OFB!

    And thank you DPSUs!

So what was the ToT for? Can these dumbos not 'tap' into the expertise gained to fabricate a gun? Or the desired part?

    'Armour-Piercing Thin Missiles'?

    Look at this!

I could make out a desperate attempt at undermining the war preparedness by the DPSUs as MII comes into play and private players seek to enter the market thereby making these monolithic behemoths ancient history! They are desperately trying to push Arjun to remain relevant:man_in_love:

What a crap of an article @grace

This is as part of the upgrade plan which was under the implementation phase last year. Any information on the planned boost of the powerplant and other upgrades?

I wish someone would take a proper picture of the tank...the first one was so full of people that only the turret was visible...now we have 2 guys blocking the view with their hideous faces.

Btw, that glacis plate looks interesting.

The Combat Improved Ajeya has been around for a long time - this is not it. This is a newer upgrade with what I think are ERA panels derived from Arjun Mk.2's developments.

Now 2 major T 72M1 upgrade programs undertaken by DRDO indigenously.

    1. - ERA Mk-II was evaluated against 84mm heat, 125mm heat, Milan warhead and AMK- 339 ammunition. With improved explosive properties and armour materials, the performance of ERA Mk-II against shaped charge warheads and kinetic energy projectiles was excellent and better than ERA Mk- I.

2.- CVRDE has up-rated the power output of the T-72 engine from 780 hp to 1000 hp by modifying the peripheral sub-systems. Development of under armour air filtration system for up-rated T-72 engine was taken up with the help of Indian industry. The air filtration system of the up-rated T-72 consists of a primary filter with unidirectional flow cyclones and a disposable secondary filter with dry-type resin impregnated or equivalent paper filter elements. The air filtration system has been configured within the available space in T-72 engine compartment and consists of the following major components: primary cyclone filter assembly; secondary filter elements; filter housing assembly; scavenge fan assembly with cable and duct; and differential pressure sensor and status indicator.

Commenting on ERA's role, a senior army officer said, "The main task of the ERA is to reduce the penetration of shaped charge warheads and KE projectiles, thereby, ensuring the non-perforation of tank armour and protection of the crew within. Positively, the newly developed ERA has achieved all necessary requirements during the trials."

The DRDO aims to start the mass production of the ERA after Transfer of Technology (ToT) to private defence manufacturers. "We will complete the process once we finalise manufacturers in the next few months," sources from the DRDO said.
