The descendants of Tipu Sultan in Kolkata are contemplating legal action against Union Minister Anantkumar Hegde of Karnataka who called the 18th century ruler of Mysore a “mass rapist” and a “brutal killer” in a tweet on Friday. The descendants said they are deeply pained by the statement and the controversy.

Hegde, the Union Minister of State for Skill Development, made the comment when he asked not to be invited for celebrations on Tipu Sultan Jayanti.

In a letter to the Karnataka Chief Minister’s Secretariat and Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner, the minister asked them not to include his name on the list of invitees for the programmes on November 10. “(I have) conveyed (to) Karnataka government not to invite me to shameful event of glorifying a person known as brutal killer, wretched fanatic and mass rapist,” Hegde wrote.

Bakhtiar Ali, one of the sixth-generation descendants of Prince Mooniruddin who was one of Tipu’s sons, said: “I will hold a meeting with all members of my family. We are contemplating legal action against Hegde for his unfounded comments against Tipu Sultan. I was aghast to hear it last night. He was such a revered ruler. I do not know on what basis he has levelled such allegations and tarnished the image of the ruler. He was a national hero and the Tiger of Mysore.”

Prince Mooniruddin and Prince Golam Muhammed were two of Tipu’s sons who were deported to Kolkata by the British. Bakhtiar is also an advocate in a Kolkata court.

“Hegde should immediately tender an unconditional apology. We are shocked and hurt by his comments. Tipu Sultan is known for his nationalism,” said Shahid Alam, another descendant of Tipu Sultan.

Alam is also a co-trustee of wakf estate of Prince Golam Mohammed. “Earlier, too, a section of people tried to defame him. After the new government was elected at the Centre, the saffron (party) once again is trying to malign (him). Historians have made it clear what a noble king he was,” Alam added.

While Hegde got support from BJP leaders, who too announced that they would not attend the programme, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the letter was not needed since he could neither accept or reject the invitation.

“As part of government, he shouldn’t have written it. The invitation will be sent out to all central and state leaders. It is up to them to accept or reject (it),” the Chief Minister told reporters. He said Tipu Sultan was a “freedom fighter” who battled against the British.

He fought British to save his own empire not India like all other rulers of that time.....He was writing letters to napolean & afghans to help him kick Britishers out & in return they can rule India...Funny thing is it was his letter to napolean who was in Egypt at that time which made him top priority of British to eliminate at earliest.

Tipu Sultan died bacuase of his Hindu Brahmin Dewan. The daughter of this man was raped by the soldiers of Tipu Sultan and when he went asking for Justice, He just asked him to send his daughter to his Harem. That Brahmin decided to teach him a lesson and the result is what we see today. Just like the children of Mongols selling oranges outside Jama Masjid in Delhi, The grand children of Tipu are begging Hindus for survival. Satya Yug ho yaa kailyug, torment a Brahmin and you will face the music.
Let me know see the reaction of liberals and pseudo secularists now.

In Dindigul(Tamilnadu), he built a big mausoleum-cum-fort and the town is named “Begumpet” after his wife or someone. He was a poacher and killed many tigers to keep trophies at his fort. Killing or revenges were taught in those days as well and unfortunately it evidences the same from our bhaijans even today. Overall, the mogul kings did commit many atrocities to environment and eco systems.

Mr. Kovind was speaking on the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
At a time when the BJP is up in arms against the Karnataka Government on 'Tipu Jayanthi' celebration, President Ram Nath Kovind’s reference to Tipu Sultan in an address to the joint session of the State legislature on Wednesday came as a morale booster to the Congress government.

Speaking on the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, the President said: “Tipu Sultan died a heroic death fighting the British. He was also a pioneer in development and use of Mysuru rockets in warfare. This technology was later adopted by Europeans.”

As soon as the President read this out, the entire ruling party members expressed their joy by thumping the desks, while there was pin drop silence on the Opposition side.

“More recently, two of our finest army chiefs – Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa and General K.S. Thimayya – were sons of Karnataka,” he pointed out.

Continuing, the President said: “Karnataka is a land of formidable soldiers. Krishnadeva Raya was the greatest ruler of the Vijayanagara empire and remains an inspiration for all Indians. Kempe Gowda was the founder of Bengaluru. Rani Chennamma of Kittur and Rani Abbakka led among the earliest battles against colonial powers.”`

    CM's praise tweet
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, in a tweet, congratulated Mr. Kovind. “Congratulations to Hon. President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind for a statesman like address to the Karnataka legislature,” the tweet said.
