They have altered a small portion of the river.

you can see in the pictures that if river banks are left as they are, it makes for a huge waste of land as you have no control over the water levels and the natural banks are not suitable for any proper construction. This is how most international cities are built along river banks -

    London (river Thames)

    Paris (river Seine)

Most old major cities including Amsterdam, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Tokyo etc. were built on river banks because access to ships meant access to trade, leading up to growth. However such cities have much better environmental awareness than any city in India - the environment can be protected through technology (emission norms, proper waste-management etc.).

Filling in the banks means the water has a much more narrow stretch to pass through, meaning a minimum level can be maintained. I'm no engineer though.

More bridges will be needed anyway, regardless of water level.

Yep more Bridges are needed. The present traffic conditions in and near Vijayawada are horrible.

Ganga cleanup is a very big project, it can't be done quickly.

There are 14 large industrial units in Delhi alone that require alternate waste disposal systems. It's a massive river.

Modi had a plan for riverfront but it was congress which was in corporation. Congress did not allow the slum to be removed from sabarmati river bank. In corporation election, congress lost. Modi announced that biggest hurdle in sabarmati riverfront is being removed now. He started the work and today there are 14 km long gardens are there on both side of river across amadavad.

It is an awesome place and i visited that just few day ago. Indroda nature park is too big and you will need one full day to see it. It is second best place in Gandhinagar to see after Akshardham.

It is a big deal in India because India is not a dictatorial regime. We have to address each and every concern if we want to do anything here. We can not take away land like chinese government do nor we can execute people like china does. We can not Ignore any concern of our people.
