    Re: India approves C-17 purchase

You seem to have ignored a very important aspect of platform availability which in turn is intrinsically linked to parts supply and support considerations.
The Ilyushin platforms can hardly be considered a viable platform for any operator because of their notorious track record with regard to parts supply and availability ! What is the cost / price you pay for low availability ?

C-17 Globemaster III aircraft to be inducted at Hindan base

C-17 Globemaster III aircraft to be inducted at Hindan base

NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force (IAF) will induct its first C-17 Globemaster III, its largest strategic heavy lift aircraft, at the Hindan air force in Ghaziabad near here after it is procured from the US.

"We have decided to induct the C-17 at the Hindan air force base when the first aircraft would be delivered to us in the 2013-14 time-frame," IAF officials told PTI here.

India had recently signed its biggest defence deal with the US to procure ten C-17 heavy-lift aircraft for USD 4.1 billion under which American defence major Boeing will set up test facilities for hi-tech aeronautics engines for the DRDO.

Hindan, the closest air force station outside the capital, is already the home base for the C-130J Super Hercules which was inducted in February for carrying out Special Operations.

Till now, Agra has been the main hub of heavy lift aircraft such as the Ilyushin-76 and Il-78 mid-air refuelers along with the bases in Chandigarh and Nagpur.

After procuring the initial ten aircraft, the IAF is also planning to order six more of them to augment its fleet of the Il-76, C-130J and An-32 transporters.

The deal was cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security for procuring the aircraft through the Foreign Military Sales route.

The Globemaster is capable of carrying a maximum payload of 77.5 tonnes, including combat vehicles, artillery guns and battle-ready troops and will strengthen India's capabilities to rapidly move troops and equipment in its areas of interest.

The four-engine aircraft is capable of taking off and landing even on makeshift runways, barely 3,500-feet long and 90-feet wide, India will be able to transport soldiers and combat systems to forward areas both on western and eastern fronts much faster.

India has no current plans for additional C-17s

India's defence minister has scotched rumours that the country has immediate plans to buy more than 10 Boeing C-17 strategic transports.

"There is presently no proposal for procurement of additional C-17s for the Indian air force," said defence minister A K Antony, in a brief written response to a question in parliament.

Rumours on Indian websites had pointed towards New Delhi ordering an additional six C-17s, with a further purchase beyond this.

On 6 July, India's cabinet confirmed that the nation would buy 10 C-17s for $4.1 billion, the largest ever India-US arms deal.

The deal was long awaited, as India had first expressed interest in the aircraft in 2009, followed by a formal letter of request in early 2010.

The sale of additional C-17s to India would be a major boost for Boeing, which has just 28 C-17s on its order backlog, stretching to mid-2014.

Boeing said that India's C-17s are due to be delivered in the 2013-14 timeframe, but has provided no further details.

The future of C-17 production depends on whether Boeing can scrape together at least 30 additional aircraft orders within the next five years. At that point, the US Air Force may consider alternatives to inducting about 30 more Lockheed C-5As into a reliability enhancement and re-engining programme.

C-5 And C-17 Are Completely in Different League Comparatively

C-5 Being One of the Largest Airlifter Can Carry More Troops and Oversized cargo than C-17

Upgradation Of C-5's with Latest Avionics and General Electric CF6-80C2 Engine will extend Its service Life to 2040 and above

C-5 Being Strategic Airlifter is Huge and takes alot of runway to operate on

While C-17 Have Both Tactical and Strategic Airlift Capabilities , Is capable of Short field take Off and Landing , Has Good Range and Thus Need for More C-17's .....U.S Has some Over 200 C-17's Operational

The Upgradation of C-5 Will Enhance its service Life thus Giving U.S Boost In Strategic Airlift Capabilities

I am glad the C-130J was chosen over all the other transport aircraft. Americans know what project management is, and when the delivery of their product has to be completed to its customer.
