C-2, A400, AN70 are aircrafts between the C17 and the C130J. They offer lower costs and more suitable payload limits, to our operational requirements, but also can carry more and larger payload's than C130 class aircrafts.

Do we have a requirement in this category? Maybe we should add more C-130s and try to revive MTA and even IL-112.

The MTA is based on the IL76 cargo hold specs, therfore can carry larger vehicles as well, unlike the C130J. The only aircrafts in IAF that are able to do similar are IL76 and C17, which however are too large to be used on every air Base or air strip.

This older post shows the issues of IAFs current fleet and where an A400 or similar aircraft would had helped:

Sadly some of the example pics are gone, might need to make an update.

The aircraft and Antonov as a whole would be interesting, but we can't afford to pi... off Russia even more than we already do right now. Losing them as a critical partner is bad enough, making an enemy out of them, that can supply both our enemies with critical techs, would be bad.

    Off with the Ruskis.

They have no problem supplying our enemies with critical techs

Besides the Chinese have no problem dealing with Ukraine even beyond that Antonov deal. Why should we bother?

As a matter of fact why shouldn't we be pissed about Russia dealing with our enemies and offering them the same techs they have offered us? Why shouldn't Russia not fear losing an old partner and cash cow ex gratia? 'Oooooo lets not anger Russia' is defeatist thinking. Soviet Union eventually as a consequence of our own political stupidity became our only and indispensable partner. Also they had beef with Chinks.

That reality no longer exists. We have and always have had options. Choosing the Russian option by default isn't making the best use of those options.

They had and so far didn't changed the policy of giving only techs and systems below the level of what is on offer to us. Su 35 for China is below the MKI upgrade offer to us.
Kilo sub sales, was below SSN leasing to us.
Partnership on a heavy class helicopter, was below the partnership offers of MTA and FGFA to us.
They also restricted the sale of techs and weapons to Pakistan, even through China, but now I wouldn't be surprised to see IL276 (MTA) ending up in PAF some day, just as RD93MK.
