AGARTALA: A video footage telecast in a local channel showing a CPM leader here lying on bundles of currency notes has left the party thoroughly embarrassed.

The footage, which was shown on 6.30pm on Thursday, showed CPM leader Samar Acharjee (42), a local committee member of Jogendranagar, narrating how he earned Rs 2.5 crore over the years by constructing 2400 low-cost sanitary toilets in three Agartala Municipal Council wards.

"I have withdrawn Rs 20 lakh from my bank account to cherish the dream of sleeping on a bed full of money. I did it because I am not a hypocrite like other comrades who try to portray themselves as proletariat in spite of having huge property," Acharjee was heard saying in the footage.

Acharjee is a contractor by profession.

Reacting to the incident, CPM local committee secretary Samar Chakraborty said the party would investigate the matter and take appropriate action against Acharjee. However, CPM state secretary Bijan Dhar and chief minister Manik Sarkar are yet to comment on the issue.

The opposition Congress has demanded a probe into movable and immovable assets of CPM leaders and ministers. Congress workers staged a demonstration in the Jogendranagar area in protest against the incident.

"Time has come to investigate how much wealth CPM leaders have," said senior Congress legislator Ratan Lal Nath.

On the other hand, state PCC working president Asish Kumar Saha alleged that it is a clear case to prove how much black money is in the hands of CPM leaders. It is hard to believe that a person can earn Rs 2.5 crore by constructing 2,400 community toilets, he said. "We have been demanding a probe into rampant corruption by CPM leaders and cadres for years. This incident has proven our allegation," said Saha.

Hope he can sleep peacefully now!! :sarcastic:

There was a time when the leaders of CPM lived a simple life...not anymore.

Most of their current leaders are hypocrites and downright corrupt as well. They will oppose anything having a remote link to America, but their children will be studying in American colleges and schools!!

I would beg to differ, as not all of the leaders are hypocrites or corrupt. Most of them including the CM are really good leaders, but a few jack asses are to be found everywhere.....

I mean in general...not just Tripura, but West Bengal and Kerala too. Most of the current CPM leaders from Kerala except V. S. Achuthanandan and a few others are like that.
