Some polticans in texas are lobbying Iraq to by texas rice, thats where their campaign contributions are coming from,, Notice how the India news allways blows up anything like this out of proportion. Its kind of like a USA saying that India supports the genocide of the Syria people by India supporting the Russians position of not supporting the Syrian people in this revolution.

I think the point is 'Basmati rice' a naturally originated product of South Asian sub continent, unfortunately US companies suceeded to earn patent right for a Hybrid product challenging the Quality Natural product. Something to do with copyright and IPR (forgot the exact term). The hybrid product produced by the US companies is a challenge to the naturally originated product in the world market.

We don’t usually think of history as being shaped by those that do nothing. but, as English philosopher Edmund Burke said, ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph [of evil] is for good men to do nothing.’ Least I can say for my self and my country we are not the ones that stood by and did nothing.

The topic here is basmati rice not SYRIA. I am not anti-American but i can't understand why the Americans want every nation on earth to behave as they want. I am also not against democracy but in fostering democracy or regime change in the ME, the US is also adding to it's problems as these countries from Iraq to Libya, Egypt and Syria will become more Islamist then they were before. Even if they were despots, Saddam,Mubarak,Gaddafi and now Assad ruled a liberal and secular governments. They will be followed by radicalists.

Before you quote Edmund Burke you must realize your govt in past have taken stands similar to Russia's stand on Syria.Haven't you heard of infamous Blood telegram.

In 1971 U.S. diplomat Archer K. Blood took a heroic stand against Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger. Blood was the U.S consul general to East Pakistan - now the independent nation of Bangladesh. Blood and his team were witnesses to a brutal military crackdown and asked for the U.S to denounce the atrocities on humanitarian grounds, but the Nixon team remained silent. Finally Blood's team sent a dissent telegram accusing the government of being "morally bankrupt". The 'Blood Telegram' marked the first time a whole U.S mission had dissented from their own government.

    The telegram stated:

Our government has failed to denounce the suppression of democracy. Our government has failed to denounce atrocities. Our government has failed to take forceful measures to protect its citizens while at the same time bending over backwards to placate the West Pak[istan] dominated government and to lessen any deservedly negative international public relations impact against them. Our government has evidenced what many will consider moral bankruptcy,(...) But we have chosen not to intervene, even morally, on the grounds that the Awami conflict, in which unfortunately the overworked term genocide is applicable, is purely an internal matter of a sovereign state. Private Americans have expressed disgust. We, as professional civil servants, express our dissent with current policy and fervently hope that our true and lasting interests here can be defined and our policies redirected.

In an earlier telegram (March 27, 1971), Blood wrote about American observations at Dhaka under the subject heading "Selective genocide"

    1. Here in Decca we are mute and horrified witnesses to a reign of terror by the Pak[istani] Military. Evidence continues to mount that the MLA authorities have list of AWAMI League supporters whom they are systematically eliminating by seeking them out in their homes and shooting them down

    2. Among those marked for extinction in addition to the A.L. hierarchy are student leaders and university faculty. In this second category we have reports that Fazlur Rahman head of the philosophy department and a Hindu, M. Abedin, head of the department of history, have been killed. Razzak of the political science department is rumored dead. Also on the list are the bulk of MNA's elect and number of MPA's.

    3. Moreover, with the support of the Pak[istani] Military. non-Bengali Muslims are systematically attacking poor people's quarters and murdering Bengalis and Hindus.
(U.S. Consulate (Dacca) Cable, Selective genocide, March 27, 1971)

So let me ask you a question, what is the real reason behind US opposition against Assad regime,Is it really because human rights or Is it because Syria provides sole Mediterranean naval base to Russia??Just think about it.

It has noting to do with Russia, Russia not a threat any longer they have about the same military budget of France or Japan, do you think France or Japan would be a military threat to the USA even if they wanted to be a threat. Russia has about the same size economy of Spain or Canada US military budget is 11 to 15 times that of Russia. You do realize that US economy is ten times that of Russia dont you. Even India has a larger GDP then Russia.
In a democracy and with freedom of the press that is what happens when the administration gets off track, they do it in a spot light. At the time you are speaking of the USSR had was threating to bury the USA, and you had a mad man that was the leader of the USSR pounding with a shoe on the podium at the United Nations screaming he was going to bury the USA and there was a real threat of communist takeing over India and the rest of the world, a type of goverment that had murdered over 20 million of their own people to gain power.. I think there is a culture differance with the US and much of the rest of the world, when some one says they are going to kill some one, we take them at their word. For example if some one says they are going to kill me, and I shoot him between the eyes, its prob going to considered self defense. It does not matter if he really meant it or if he even could do it, it justs matter that he said it. Doesnt matter if it was the USSR or religious nuts in Iran or Pakistan. That means we have the right to kill them first in self defense or do anything else that is necessary.
