WASHINGTON — The United States has deployed sophisticated F-22 fighter jets to the United Arab Emirates amid deepening tensions between Iran and its pro-U.S. neighbors, officials said April 30.

The U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, would not say how many F-22s would be sent to the Al-Dhafra air base in the United Arab Emirates. Military officers tend to avoid publicly discussing details of operations at the U.S. air base.

An Air Force spokeswoman confirmed that a number of F-22 Raptors, the most advanced fighter in the U.S. fleet, would be deployed to the region without mentioning the base or Iran.

“The United States Air Force has deployed F-22s to Southwest Asia. Such deployments strengthen military-to-military relationships, promote sovereign and regional security, improve combined tactical air operations, and enhance interoperability of forces, equipment and procedures,â€￾ said Maj. Mary Danner-Jones.

Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby told reporters the move “was a very normal deploymentâ€￾ in keeping with an adjustment of U.S. forces in the region following the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.

Territorial disputes between Iran and the United Arab Emirates over three islands in the Gulf have flared recently, with Washington voicing support for Abu Dhabi’s stance.

The argument over the Gulf islands comes against the backdrop of tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program, with the U.S., European and Israeli governments fearing Tehran is pursuing a clandestine nuclear weapons project.

Iran’s atomic ambitions and growing missile arsenal have raised concerns in Gulf Arab states, which have negotiated arms deals with Washington to build up missile defenses as a counter to Iran.

In December, the United States announced a $3.48 billion arms sale with the United Arab Emirates for missile defense batteries and radars.

Saudi Arabia which has it's own clandestine nuclear weapons is ok. Iran with it's clandestine program is harram. Same old story, but it will be interesting to see what happens. They have already weakened Iran with sanctions for years. When has the US ever imposed sanctions and not attacked? Even countries which complied like Libya were attacked even after they gave up weapons. Sadaam gave everything he had in the last few days and was still attacked. The excuses will be made to attack and then attack comes.
Pakistan has not had any sanctions so they are still a decade away from attack. When was the last time US attacked a country without weakening a county with sanctions? I have no preferences one way or the other with Iran. RIL will take a big hit with an Iran hit. Our refining capacity is tuned to Iranian crude. Don't think the effects will be pretty on our economy. Sri Lanka will be messed up, their only oil refinery runs on Iranian crude exclusively.

Iran will get attacked an US will take its oil, that is what will happen.

@olivers Correct. But US has to fight wars in order for its bloated defense budget and defense industry to survive.

You will be proved wrong. This deployement is for Pakistan. The TAPI line is sponsered by US . Pakistan has to watch out. The game is nearing its end now. US has now openly started calling Pakistan a sanctuary of terrorist. They have not used these words for Iran till date.

Do you know the meaning of politics? You do what pleases people and not what is correct. Obama will do it and very soon.

US has been calling Iran a part of "axis of evil" (Bush younger) and to be supporting terrorists, plus claims that it is developing nuclear weapons... same game as before Iraq war, same game as before Afghan war... I don't see how I can be wrong. US may attack Pakistan, but that does not exclude attack on Iran. Iran is, strategically, more important to US than Pakistan - it is just sitting there, full of oil, and near US-controlled oil fields in Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

And take a look at map: Saudi Arabia, US ally; Iraq, US supported demoncracy; Afghanistan, US military base; Kuwait, long-time US ally... Iran is surrounded.

If balochistan is librated, USa will be able to sell oil from Central Asia thru Gwader port. They have invested heavily in oil exploration in Central Asia. They need this port for supplies for afganistan also and for that they will have to finish off Pakistan.

So they may attack either Pakistan or Afghanistan... but I doubt they'll do both, US can't fight two such wars (and later insurgencies) at once...
