The experience was that of direct combat experience in the Falklands in 1982. The bad weather would have grounded CATOBAR operations. Even the US operates VSTOL aircraft, now think why they would waste money on VSTOL aircraft if there wasn't a reason given that they've got over 1,000 CATOBAR aircraft.

Nope, because CATOBAR aircraft have to come in hard and fast to land, they're taught to slam down hard to counter a potential fall in sea, but sea can also rise, this is why they have strong landing gear. However, in stormy seas, the rise and fall is much bigger, and a heavy landing with rising sea is destructive, really bad and you might not even hit the runway. Whereas VSTOL just gently wafts down.

Hydrodynamic drag is much greater under water.

Vanguard uses one RR PWR2 to produce enough steam to power 2x27,500hp turbines for 55,000hp. So 4 would give 110,000hp and 6 would give 165,000hp.

Only if you think 160,000hp is similar to 95,000hp.

Once you get the F-35B's you would retire the Tornados then what will you use against ISIS?

What use is the QE, no nuclear propulsion. Unless you are invading a European country what use is it?

Deploying a semi reliable F-35B with limited A-A capability.

Sad to see Royal Navy plunging into the depths of history.

    F-35s and Typhoons.

Same use as Russian, Indian and Chinese carriers, which also aren't nuclear. Don't give us ideas.

All 5th gens have superior A2A ability than 4th gens.

It's replacing the Harrier, I'd call that rising out of the depths.

Typhoon lacks capability to hit ground targets.

Don't compare our navy with yours. Different purposes. Our current AC is a Russian drama. We have just started building AC's and will be using them in our neighbourhood not for military ops tens of thousands of miles away. We are okay with diesel/gas and will move onto nuclear as we need to.

F-35 in stealth mode can carry 4 AIM-120. 2 for each enemy fighter. What do you do when facing a sortie of 3? No cannon and poor manevourability.

Soviet techniques favoured strength in numbers. 3 Mig 21's will overcome an F-35.

A formation of 100 will overcome the QE.

What costs more? 100 Mig 21's or 40 F-35 + QE and helis and all fancy equipment. Basic things which you have overlooked and spent money on this beautiful and harmless helicopter dock.

    Discovering new depths.

doesn't it make things like, worse for the QE? The other engines on QE are 'auxillaries' . Let me assume you keep 2 of those running at all times. 90+30= 120 HP, 1.5 times the power of Zumwalt

    - 5 times the crew, electricity requirement must be like 8 or 9 times because of flight operations, maintainence hangar, crew living conditions etc. and then a ship more than 3 times as big. 14 fueling stations doesn't seem eough.

I wonder what the US Marine Core- the users of the QE will finally do with it .....oh wait....you didn't know that :haha::mrgreen::lol::lol::lol:

Typhoon currently has Paveway IV and EPWII but will get Brimstone and Storm Shadow next year.

Most of our ops tend to be just South of Europe not 10,000 miles away.

At first but later blocks will see 6 AIM-120s.

    3 MiG-21s wouldn't even cover a Typhoon, or even a Mirage or Tornado F3.

50 F-35Bs with 6 Meteors will shoot down 300 MiG-21s. Then the enemy has to build 300 new planes and train 300 new pilots and build a new navy. Furthermore the QEs will be guarded by at least 1 Type 45 with 48 Sea Viper missiles or up to 192 CAMM missiles and 8 Harpoons, wherever it goes, not to mention 3 Phalanx systems on the QE and 2 on the Type 45 plus another 4 30mm revolver cannons between them. And there'll be an SSN guarding it too with RGM-84 and Spearfish.

You've underestimated the situation. And we usually bring NATO along with us too.

F-35 has plans to carry 6 A2A missiles in the future.

Bring NATO along with us too.
You should be ashamed of saying that.

Countries in NATO can say we have UK with us. UK should be the muscle in the alliance not the one running for help.

Point is QE should have been CATOBAR or EMALS with F-35C or F-18 SH ( which USN just placed order for ). Would be effective.

If you are spending so much money spend it the right way. RN is supposed to complement the USN not rely on it.

You have built a huge helicopter dock and picked the worst F-35 variant. Terrible poor decisions. With things heating up in Afghanistan and limited combat radius of B variant what usefulness would Carrier borne F-35B's have ?

I explained the same thing years ago on this forum to your compatriot @HMS Astute

The UK still had a responsibility on this planet and has failed to do its part and with this strategic equipment mistake it will fail more.

Too late now I suppose. The grave has been dug
