I get what you are saying, but is 36 aircraft enough to replenish our ageing fleet?
We have a huge number of old Mig-21s operating even today. By your estimation, what should be the total no. of Rafales that India to look to get to fully replace the old fleets?

Rafales alone can't replace all our jets, especially achieving sanctioned squadron strength.

We need 350 new jets on contract over the next 5 years. This has to be split between LCA, Gripen and Rafale. And we have only 159 on contract today. So we need two new contracts of 90 jets each between Gripen and Rafale.

After the first set of contracts have been signed, the numbers have to increase by 30% for all three jets. Or by 50% for Rafale and Gripen in case IAF has decided they don't want more than 123 LCAs.

If we do this, we still won't reach 42 squadrons by 2027, but at 37 squadrons, we will be far far better placed than today.
