Will approach India for Balochistan's freedom: Baloch leader
By PTI | Updated: 24 Feb, 2017, 18:51 hrs IST
    • Balochistan's freedom has said that he would approach friends like India to seek help for their cause.

Amir Ahmed Suleman Daud, officially known as His Highness the Khan of Kalat, welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention in favour of Balochistan during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort last year.

"India is one of the powers of region, the biggest democracy in the world. The Prime Minister's [Modi's] was the only voice we heard in a long time coming out of the neighbourhood and appreciated the intervention. We know we have got a friend," Daud told PTI at a media briefing in London yesterday. Pakistan had criticised Modi for mentioning the people of Balochistan in his address, seen as indirect support to the Balochistan freedom struggle.

"In the last few days, people of Balochistan, Gilgit, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir have thanked me, have expressed gratitude, and expressed good wishes for me," Modi had said, in a significant policy shift on the region.

Daud, who has been living in exile in Wales in the UK for the last few years, indicated that he plans to approach India and other friendly countries like the US to seek help for the cause of Balochistan's independence.

"We are confident we will get help from a lot of friends, especially from the West and India. We are happy the Republicans are in power in the US; we have lots of friends in the US Congress. Maybe also China can become a friend. We would like to say to them that they are coming through the wrong actor in this game [Pakistan]," he added.

Earlier on Thursday, Daud addressed a seminar entitled 'Balochistan Re-visited' within the British Parliament complex, organised by the UK-based Democracy Forum, during which he accused Pakistan of "colonising" the sovereign state of Kalat.

"Until August 1947, all treaties state clearlyKalat Balochistan's position as independent and sovereign. Why we lost our independence was the result of a change in British policy and geo-politics," he claimed.

Daud claims that Kalat remained independent until March 28, 1948, when it merged under duress with Pakistan.

He now plans to lobby international organisations, including the United Nations, to "pay the debt to his homeland".

"We will approach parliaments of the world and make our issues known. We are an occupied land; we did not accede," he said.

Unfortunately , there isn't any consistency in India's position , as the Baloch would soon realise.

With a more pliant CoAS of the PA, NS will reach out to India & guess what our NM will march 2 steps forward to accommodate him.

All that's happened in Uri , Pathankot , 26/11, etc etc would be put on the back burner till the next event derails the bonhomie in our relationship with Pakistan.

India's reluctance in matters of geopolitics (look at how hesitantly and slowly we are moving when it comes to Vietnam and other ASEAN countries troubled by China) and the lack of a single, consolidated Baloch leadership/representation will be issues.

But eventually, I hope India and the Baloch reach a level of cooperation and comfort, that India can presume to speak with Iran and Afghanistan on their behalf, essentially relaying the message that the Baloch are ready to foreswear any claims on Afghan and Iranian territory if the two countries are ready to back (more covertly than overtly) their movement in Pakistan. A big part of this is allowing India to function in these border regions in aid of the Baloch rebels.

But this is all quite far away, for now I hope we just start funding and arming any and all Baloch factions opposed to Pakistan; while simultaneously providing diplomatic and moral support to them on the world stage.

If we don't find a way to end that, it's going to seriously undermine the whole movement. It's somewhat similar to the problem of the Kurdish movement, they lay claim to land in so many countries and are so divided amongst themselves that the success of their movement will always be very limited.

Only way is the limited yet effective involvement. We cant allow them too powerful .Our relations with Iran will be damaged .
And will seriously undermine our ops in that region.Support Afghan based groups for a certain extent in additional with Baloch support .

This whole episode is less to do with the rights of Baloch and more to do with undermining Indo-Iranian relations.

Modi's foreign policy has been such a huge failure....

Conflicting interests are holding India from going ahead....... There are cluster of countries who has different interests in this conflict, With the kind of foreign policy we have, we will not be in a position to do anything more overtly or covertly, May be a statement here and there......
